Sunday was dreary here. But still 52* Tomorrow and all the rest of the week we will be seeing temps in the 70's. Then a drop back to the 50's on Friday. Beautiful spring type weather in February. I won't hold my breath yet!
AS I PONDER....
Lately I have been thinking about "fake news". Bet you know where I got that term from, don't you? Fake news is everywhere. Recently I read this study about youth being unable to tell the difference between 'fake' news stories and the real ones. Heck, I have a hard time telling the difference. Even when we hear the words coming out of a person's mouth how are we supposed to know what is true and what is not? I used to be able to watch the news and could be pretty certain what I was hearing was the absolute truth! Not anymore! And it is sad! I don't have time to go out and check every news story I hear. Do you? So how do we decide what is true and what is 'fake'. There was a time when I could trust the President of the United States to let me know what was true. But notso much anymore. And I am saddened by that. It used to be the job of a reporter, or an editor, to check that the sources are true. Now, I guess, it is the job of the reader. Frankly, I am just too tired to do all of it!
WHAT I AM LEARNING...
I am learning that excitement comes in many places. I was almost ready to nod off in front of the TV this evening when my phone buzzed with a text. It said, "I love you granny" I about jumped out of my chair. It was my soldier texting. And then he called. And texted more. And called again. It was so good to hear from him. Because of good behavior they were allowed their phones for 3 hours tonight! He called his sister and his uncle too!! He hasn't yet entered into Basic Training. He is still in reception. This is where they do lots of paperwork, medical exams, vaccinations, issue their uniforms and boots, get their haircut, see the dentist. And stand around a lot. He had an issue with swollen ankles so had to go spend a couple days in sickbay. Now he is better. Said it was from standing around a lot and drinking a lot and fluid gathered in ankles. But they checked him out to make sure it wasn't a heart problem. He sounded very good. He's upbeat. He is ready to ship to basic. That's what they call it. But they only go to another area of the base!! And once there Basic Training starts. 14 weeks from that day we will see him again. Believe me it was good to hear from him. I held it all together until we hung up and then I bawled like a baby. Probably won't get another call until the short call with his address and then letters only!!

A QUOTE I WANT TO SHARE...
In Honor of President's Day in America!
What I'm fighting...
A peek into my week...
Harley had a half day out of school on Friday so we went to the DMV and got my license renewed (not due until April) and she got a State ID issued. Since she hasn't taken driver's ed yet she needs a State ID to get her nose pierced and to get onto the Army base when we go see Darian graduate. So this week we will go down to do the piercing and she has been begging to do some shopping. Guess I'll suck it up and go with her. I am just not that into shopping! But she loves it. She only works on Thursday and Saturday this week. And there is no school on either Thursday or Friday so we might do something fun!
A final thought...
WOW! Already February is coming to a close. One of the quotes in my planner says, "a year from now you will wish you had started today." So I am going to start today!! How about you??
Darian looks great in his uniform! I'm so glad you got a chance to text with him and talk to him! I bet it felt good to hear his voice and hear what is going on. Seems like a long time, but those 14 weeks without contact will go by really fast, I bet.
ReplyDeletebetty
I think he looks great too. Except for the baldness! LOL! I did really feel good to hear his voice. He was so upbeat and that made me feel good!
DeleteI am happy you got to hear from Darian today!! He was smiling! 14 weeks...after six you may get some phone calls...it just depends on the Drill Sgt! Hang in there! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL! I had to ask for that smile. He doesn't normally smile in pictures! Yes, those drill Sgts can be a problem. But Darian said they really weren't that bad!!
DeleteHi Paula - he does look different ... but oh so lovely to get that text and those calls ... good lad!! Harley will keep you amused ... and enjoy your time with her ... lovely photos - oh boy do they change image wise ... have a good week - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHe is a good lad! I am proud of him!
DeleteWhat wonderful news to hear from Darian! Good to know his heart is okay and that he's staying hydrated, too. Those 14 weeks mght be long for you, but they will be busy for him! Have fun shopping with Harley. I like the quote from your planner. So true, isn't it? Wishing you a happy Monday!
ReplyDeleteForgot to add that I am curious about what you planned to "start today", but inspired by the quote you shared from your planner, I have come back to tell you I thought of something I will start today for myself!
DeleteHe made be overdoing it a bit on the hydration! I didn't really start anything today. Monday's are always a day of recovery from the weekend for me!!
DeleteDefinitely making a start, or I should say continuing the beginnings of starting over...packing and getting ready to move when the house sells. Glad you heard from the soldier boy. Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ma! I think that is a good way to look at it. We are making a start at starting over!!
DeleteWhat is happening to America is depressing and I find it hard to sit down and blog. I have a good friend who is an elected Republican and even she is upset.
ReplyDeleteIt is depressing!!
DeleteBelieve none of what you hear and half of what you see (Ben Franklin), and you're on your own for what you read.
ReplyDeleteBen Franklin was a smart man!
DeleteWhat a wonderful surprise from Darian! He looks really good in both those uniform pictures. :)
ReplyDeleteYour chicken sunflower salad sounds super yummy! I used to be addicted to popping sunflower seeds all day. Lately I've been taking white breast meat, massaging it with Marie's blue cheese dressing and throwing in unsalted peanuts.
It was very good to hear from him. Yum that sounds so good. I love blue cheese!
DeleteI trust the media.... Tons more than I trust anything that comes out of you know who's mouth... I know that sometimes the media doesn't get it "all right" or "quite right" and they do make mistakes. My thoughts - when that happens - own up to it and say it. I have my stations that I watch and depend on to be as truthful as they can. I love David Muir on World News - so he is a "go to"... Strange, everyone believed the news (or many many people did) - until Trump started all of this fake news stuff. Hitler did the same thing....
ReplyDeleteAnyway - I thought about watching the Good Fight - but when I saw some previews, knew it would not be for me - I liked The Good Wife with Alicia... And then after last night - you were going to have to pay to watch it...The Good Fight that is.
Linda in VA
I think we can trust the media too. For the most part. We just have to know who the media is! I agree that most of those who are not believing the media are also believing Trump. And I don't believe most of what he says. I'm not going to pay to watch The Good Fight. I didn't much like what I saw!
DeleteThe Private looks so... grown up!
ReplyDeleteI envy your temperatures, although I did take the dog out without a jacket (I'm house sitting).
We are going to be 72* here in a bit. He does look grown up doesn't he?
DeleteThat's one thing the schools are starting to teach. How to really read something and critically think about it. Hopefully those lessons will take.
ReplyDeleteSo good to hear from Darian.
I am glad they are teaching the kids how to think for themselves. In this day and age that is so important!
DeleteYou have reason to be a proud granny, that's for sure. I love these posts.
ReplyDeleteThank you Inger!
DeleteI have to agree with you on fake news. My solution is to stop watching it altogether.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to stop watching all together! That is what Trump wants us to do!
DeleteI'm not a big shopping fan either but I am a big fan of spending a day together with the ones I love and I know that you are as well so enjoy your spree and grab some lunch out together to make it more palatable for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your advice Wendy! Eating always makes things better!!
DeleteIt must have been so lovely to get that phone call. It will be hard for you when you're down to letters only. But you must be so proud of him. I hope you survive the shopping trip and add in some fun this week.
ReplyDeleteThank you Wendy! That is my plan!!
