I love Thursdays! It is when I get nosy and ask you questions. Asking questions is how we get to know more about each other. Don't you think??
When I was younger we lived in a busy neighborhood. On Halloween it would not be unusual for my mom to have hundreds of little spooks coming to the door begging. She delighted in keeping track of how many visited us. Now, there just aren't that many kids coming anymore. Last year I had 5!! I live in a neighborhood that doesn't have very many younger kids. (Or older kids for that matter. Unless you count us older people as 'kids'). Ha! Ha!
Halloween is Monday? How do you celebrate? Do you dress-up? Do you hand out candy? Do you have lots of trick-or-treat-ers where you are living??
For years I sat on the porch and handed out candy. But this year I'm not. The kids in our neighborhood have dwindled and there are very few people that hand out candy. They ones that go trick or treating go to neighborhoods elsewhere. I'll be missing the happy smiles on the little ones as they collect their treats.
ReplyDeleteIt is rather sad what is becoming of the holiday. But I guess all things change.
Deletewhen I was growing up - we used to get over 400 kids or more at our house! we would run out of candy and start giving out the stuff we had gotten when we went out. stuff we did not like that is - har!
Deletebut there are so many special functions around us now - where they give out candy and the kids can stay inside and warm and dry. But it sure does take away from the fun!

WOW 400 kids is a lot of kids!!
DeleteLaura and I will be handing out candy this Halloween. When I sold my house in a suburb, thirty years ago, I had no idea there is no trick or treating out here in the country, where house are a mile apart. But here in this trailer park community, there are families and families of children, and we're ready.
ReplyDeleteIt makes sense they wouldn't trick or treat with houses so far apart. I hope you have a great turnout where you are now living.
DeleteWe turn out lights out and hole up in a dark room and watch Netflix. We have 3 dogs and they are not fond of Halloween.
ReplyDeleteThat may be what I do too. I will be watching DWTS!
DeleteWe have anywhere from 10 to 50 trick or treaters each year. Never know how much candy to buy - so I make sure I buy stuff I like - LOL! That way, leftovers go in my tummy.... well, that might not be a good thing - ha! I don't dress up.
ReplyDeleteOh, last year, I could not figure out why no one was coming to the house. I would see them from upstairs or hear them - but no one. Around 9, there was a really really loud banging on my front door. It was kids! They said our doorbell was broken - arghh! so they were coming, but I didn't know it!! It is fixed now...

LOL! I don't have a doorbell anymore. So they have to knock!!
DeleteI'm wondering how many trick or treaters we will get now that we are not in a HOA and there is an elementary school about 3 blocks from us. I'm going to get a few bags of candy and if we run out, we'll run out. Our church is having trunk or treat on Sunday, so son and the kids are going to go to that event. Someone did mention here that in their neighborhood they got 400 kids before they ran out of candy (had to be a lot of candy I think!)
ReplyDeletebetty
I'll be waiting to hear how many you get. Our church is doing a trunk or treat on Sunday too.
DeleteI don't get any trick or treaters. That doesn't prevent me from buying candy. :D
ReplyDeleteI have a holiday shirt (a sparkly pumpkin) that I wear on the day--otherwise, I don't dress up.
Doesn't stop me from buying the candy, either, Kwiz!!
DeleteWhere I live has no trick-or-treaters. And the place before that, too. I kind of miss having kiddos come around.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun, isn't it!
DeleteEach year it dwindles down - supposed to rain this Halloween. There are several inside places and malls that open up, and if it rains, those places will be packed.
ReplyDeleteWe have a beautiful day with temps in the 80's predicted here!
DeleteYa (unfortunately) DH delights in opening the garage door, putting out the lawn chairs and distributing candy. Me not so much. I lost my enthusiasm a couple years ago when we'd spot vans and truck-loads arriving at the ends of our sub-division, slowing and letting hoards of little (and not-so-little) kids out like the fabled Trojan horse. This being a week night, I'm hoping there will be less. Either than, or I buy another bottle of wine. LOL!
ReplyDeleteSounds like Tom likes it!! A second bottle of wine sounds like a great idea!!!
DeleteI will have about 14 or so...mostly relatives! I take photos of them every year! It is a fun night, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays...next to May Day:)
ReplyDeleteHalloween hasn't ever been one of my fun holidays. But the kids sure love it!
DeleteI'm excited to be in the new house because maybe I will have beggers. I have not had any beggars, not one, since we moved to this area 15 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI am hope you have masses, Wendy!
DeleteTrick or treat is not as big over here in the UK although it has grown considerably in my life time and I certainly used to take my children out to visit neighbours who wanted a little visit from little ones in the early evening :) Since moving to a rather dark house, up a long tree lined path, we haven't had any visitors so maybe we're just TOO spooky now!!
ReplyDeleteWe crazy Americans have some crazy holidays!! Glad it is catching on over there!
DeleteI no longer dress up, but I did purchase candy this year as I have noticed more young families move into the area. Some years I have had less than 10 kids. I think it is because the homes are so far apart and they are too lazy to walk door to door.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if they are too lazy, but our houses aren't real close together either. Just no kids here
DeleteNo trick-or-treaters here. The street is too dark and the townhomes are set back from the street. Even if someone left their lights on, parents wouldn't want their kids walking the long dark driveways. We're going to a showing of the movie Hocus Pocus.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good plan Gram!
DeleteWhen we lived in Hutch we never had more than 10 in the 38 years we lived on Harding Street. Moving to a little 1/2 acre tract in Loosiana don't expect a single spook. This will be my third year helping the kids with their spook house, the past 2 years we have run 500-800 trough that garage setup my son in law builds each October and expect that many again this year. I am the candy man on the exit door, it's fun to watch the little ones, scared when they enter, screaming with joy when the exit. Only allowed to trick or treat from 6-8 on the 31st, that's enough for me
ReplyDelete10 each year? Knowing you, you probably turned the lights out and the dogs loose! LOL. Glad you are at the spook house again this year. Good to get out!
DeleteIn my previous neighborhood we would have 100 to 125 trick or treaters. Don't expect to see ny here in this locked door over 55 community. So me and my grand dog will travel back to the old neighborhood for a visit this year.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good plan Elaine!
DeleteWe don't get many kids at all and I haven't passed out candy in a few years! Mainly because they always ring the doorbell and the cats freak out! Plus I am too lazy to walk from the back of the house where the TV is to the front! Lame, I know, but it's the truth!
ReplyDeleteI'm that lazy too Jeanette.
DeleteWe don't seem to get very many trick or treaters. Hubby and I both getting over being sick, so I think it will be a quiet night in for us, just a Halloween movie or two, and candy, of course.
ReplyDeleteOf course!!
