I need to keep up a schedule with my blog posting. It is easy to become complacent and lazy. Especially in the summer. Since I love the Wednesday Hodgepodge let's go with it today. Head over to From This Side of the Pond. Joyce poses the questions. We answer. And don't forget to pay a visit to other blogs on the link list! That is what makes this fun??
1. How did you welcome the month of July, and tell us one fun thing you did to celebrate the 4th. (or the weekend for any non-USA residents playing along today)
We really had a laid back and relaxing 4th of July. Paige was busy this past weekend so her dad and she stayed home. We just laid around and avoided being outside in the humidity. When the sun went down we got in the car and headed to a fantastic fireworks display at the Kansas State Fair grounds. Which is about 3 miles from my house. We completed the evening with frozen treats from Sonic!!
2. Right now..what's your favorite red thing? white thing? blue thing?
My favorite red, white, and blue right now is on my mantle. Little flags, Richard's flag from his memorial service and this cute little banner, with red stars and blue whales, I got from the Target Dollar Spot. Don't you just love that place??

3. Wave the white flag, raise a red flag, fly your freak flag...which 'flag' have you flown most recently? Explain.
I've been flying my white flag for going on two years now. I surrender!! I tried to fight the grief at first. Now, I just give in and let it wash over me when it comes. No point in trying to resist. And as we near the two-year anniversary I am feeling the need to once again stop and reflect! Cry! And remember!!

4. According to Cond Nast Traveler these are the seven best places to visit in July-
a boat safari in Botswanna's Okavango Delta, Riviera Maya Mexico (it's whale shark season and apparently you can swim with them), Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, Pamploma Spain, St. Petersburg Russia, the Fuji Rock Festival at Mount Naeba Japan, the Salzburg Festival in Salzburg Austria
If time and money weren't factors would you want to see any/all of these? Which would you most like to see and why?
On this list I have only visited the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. I've no desire to travel to Austria or Russia. Or even Spain. I love Mexico but don't feel it is a safe place to travel. So I will stay home. (Like I was going anyway, LOL) I get seasick easily so I will skip the boat safari as well. So I guess that leaves Japan. Darian has a Marine buddy who recently left for Fuji for his duty station. Maybe we could pop in and say hi to Stephen.

5. Grilled cheese, pimento cheese, or mac and cheese...your favorite from the cheesy treats listed?
I like cheese of any kind! But, on this list, I'll take a gooey-ooey grilled cheese sandwich.

6. What makes you sweat?
I sweat everything! That is just how I roll! Right now this humidity (78%) is making me sweat.

7. Your favorite movie with a 'patriotic' theme of some sort?
As many of you know, I am not a big movie person. But within the past year we have seen The Patriot, Saving Private Ryan, and American Sniper. Of those three I really enjoyed The Patriot!

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I am sick of the media. I don't know if it is worse than it used to be. Or if it is just EVERYWHERE anymore but I hate their spin on EVERYTHING. Know what I mean. I am over the political BS. I am tired of "cop-bashing" and I am really, really tired of how overly sensitive and highly 'politically correct' everyone has to be! We can't even express an opinion anymore without being attacked for our own feelings. I am so over it all!!

I am so with you on the media. I honestly can hardly stand to have the news on at all anymore. Makes my head want to explode. Thinking of you as you mark this difficult anniversary.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joyce! The media are such pot stirrers!
DeleteI'm with you on the media. I just want facts. Sending good thoughts your way as you take this time to cry and remember.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gram!
DeleteI agree with you on the political correctness. It is ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry for your loss. :(
Our youngest son is a Marine. He has just celebrated his second year in the Corps. He is stationed in Okinawa, Japan. We won't get to see him until next year.
Have a blessed day.
I had a brother stationed in Okinawa in the late 60's! Not seeing them for such a long time has to be hard!
DeleteI'm so sorry for your loss; don't hold back the grief, letting it flow has helped me get it out and move on with my day. Does it get easier, yes (little steps), but it never seems to go completely away...I'm not sure if it ever will. You are in my thoughts... Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBest Wishes,
Lori in Blue Ridge, GA
Thank you Loris. You sound like someone who has experienced this kind of grief!
DeleteSorry to hear of your loss. I hate the political correctness, too. The media is going to spin whatever it is out of proportion. We don't bother to watch television at all. The news is slanted and everyone on there has to be immodestly dressed.
ReplyDeleteI do agree about the news being slanted. So liberal! I think I might watch too much TV. LOL Thanks for visiting me today!!
DeleteYum. frozen treats from Sonic, a great way to end a night :) I am sick of the media too, can barely stand to watch any of it.
ReplyDeleteExactly how I feel!!
DeleteSounds like a good way to celebrate the 4th. Yes the media can be too much most of the time, especially when big things are happening. You hang on to your white flag. We all deal with grief in different ways and two years is not very long in the scheme of things.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep on flying the white flag, Wendy! Thank you!!
DeleteWe had a quiet 4th. Went bulk grocery shopping and then out to eat at a fast-food restaurant - oh boy! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI love grilled cheese!!! But I also love mac and cheese - especially one that I have made a time or two that has 4 different cheeses in it.
Linda in VA
I have a great 4 cheese recipe too! Yum!
DeleteI am tired of the media and tired of the election...neither are good enough for the America I once knew.
ReplyDeleteSince the grands grew up I miss Mac and Cheese so we have a grilled cheese instead.
Everyone grieves differently, there is no right or wrong way. Do what you want, how you want.:)
Thank you FSOF! And yes, many prayers are needed for this country!!
DeleteI hear you on the media rant! We have been having a few days of keeping the TV off lately and I am enjoying the peace!
ReplyDeleteI just tune out or turn off with the news!!
DeleteYou and me both Paula. I think the Media is trying to start another civil war.
ReplyDeleteI hope we never see that Wendy!!
DeleteI agree 100% about the media!! They suck!
ReplyDeleteI join you with the white flag. Glad yall had a relaxing safe holiday.
I'll wave my flag a little for you too, Holli!!
DeleteSounded like a fun Fourth of July :) A visit to Sonic is always a good thing! I too agree about the media and the political correctness. Absolutely insane with things going on these days; I fear it will get much worse before it starts to get better.
ReplyDeletebetty
I fear that too, Betty!!
DeleteWouldn't ya know :) Of those movies you listed, The Patriot was the only one I've not seen!
ReplyDeleteToday's so-called journalists make me ashamed to admit that was my major. My FB addiction is even beginning to wane (gasp!). There's so much deceit and graft going on, but come on ... all this rhetoric and public slamming isn't going to make a whit of difference.
Let the tears come. I think it's an honor to have loved and been loved the way you were.
You should get a copy of The Patriot to watch! It was good! I need to stay off the Facebook feeds for my news. Just gets me so fired up!
DeleteYeah, just about anything makes me sweat, too. Sorry about the humidity. I hope things dry out for you soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Liz!
DeleteI'm with you on the media and for what it's worth, I do think they are worse. I went to school for journalism and we were taught that a story should contain nothing but facts so people could make up their own minds. Opinion was to be left to the editorial page. That definitely doesn't happen these days.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to summer and blogging I am the opposite of you. I'm a school bus driver so I don't work during the summer and that's when I have lots of time and do my best (most regular) blogging.
Tears are good and you should go with them. We all grieve at our own pace. I do pray that you can find comfort in your memories instead of just sadness.
I'm retired but I am raising two grands and I'm doing lots of taxiing this summer!! Thank you for your kind words
DeleteGrief never takes a holiday ... it just hides tucked away in your heart and peeks out to remind you of what you lost off and on. Mom's passing will be 2 years this December. Thinking on her right now the tears come. How I miss her. I don't think time heals like like they say, I think it just creates a scab that never heals underneath until your memory picks it open and it visits you again and stays until the scab forms again. My thoughts are with you this July.
ReplyDeleteNo, it doesn't take a break at all, does it Elaine! I like your analogy. That is exactly how it is!!
DeleteLove your last comment. I so agree with you. As for travel, the Salzburg Christmas markets and Botswana are still on my list. Would love to see Russia again, but doubt that will happen.
ReplyDeleteI doubt I will travel much anymore either. Too costly!!
DeleteI totally get the summertime blog lag. Me too!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you interpreted question #3. Waving the white flag, giving in to the grief when you need to. It's not an easy thing to do.
The media? Yep sick of it. They all seem to grab on to one topic at the same time and then chew on it incessantly until the next bit of raw meat is thrown at them.
They do chew on some of it for way too long, don't they??
DeleteI've been a widow now over 20 years and still wave that white flag of surrender. Holidays are especially hard. It's not easy but it does get better.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ma. I am looking forward to better!!
