A Cool Life Hack

I want to share one of my favorite life hacks!

Do you need an ice pack?
Want one that isn't hard?
One that is malleable!

Use a gallon size zip lock bag.
Add 1 part rubbing alcohol+3 parts water.
(I use 2 cups alcohol and 6 cups of water)
Squeeze out excess air and lie flat to
Freeze in the freezer.

This never gets hard and will last for a long time. I have one in my freezer right now that has been there a year. I double bag mine as a precaution.

Great to use for aches and pains and sprains.
Also was good to put on my pillow when the A/C was off and the house was hot!!

  1. Hi Paula - gosh what an interesting way to create an ice pack ... and I can imagine the relief it'd bring when the heat was insufferable ...

Cheers and have a good weekend - Hilary

  2. Great hack! Doubling bagging is a good precaution, too. Couple of bags like that and a popsicle (I made Arnie Palmer popsicles)... who needs A/C? ;-)

    2. Well, and Arnie Palmer beverage is half lemonade, half unsweetened iced tea mixed together So I just make that combo, then pour into popsicle molds and freeze. I have the old Tupperware popsicle molds. I like my Arnie Palmers a little less sweet, so I use more tea than lemonade. Just something different on a hot day. Sometimes I just make tea popsicles.

    3. Yummy! Sounds good. I wish I had kept my Tupperware Popsicle molds. Sold them in a garage sale years ago. My boys weren't really into Popsicles.

  3. Thanks for sharing that clever idea. It makes sense the alcohol would keep it from freezing. So far we've not lost power so have had our a/c. But it would be a good idea to have one of these on hand.

    1. We have lost power twice this summer. Both times at night! I am not a good sleeper if I get hot!

  5. Good idea for when the kids come to visit. There's always a bump or bruise. Also might feel soothing for a migraine.

  6. Great idea! I never thought about that but it makes sense with the alcohol since it doesn't freeze. I'm going to give this a try. thanks Paula!

  7. When Tom had his hip replacement done, the nurses at the Joint Club showed us how to make these. (Really, that's the name of the rehab facility!)

So glad you published this, since we've probably a couple remaining (buried) in the freezer somewhere I'd forgotten about!

  9. our a/c was off last night for awhile. I wet a rag with cold water, put a t-shirt around it and pressed it onto my neck to try and sleep - it did help. Wish I had known about this too!

  10. I always have an ice pack -- or bag of frozen veggies -- in the freezer. I broke my foot three years ago and needed to use an ice pack three times a day. I even can find them! Take good care and keep cool.
