Keep On With Life Hacks

It is a glorious Thursday here at our house. Hot! Temp is in the mid-90's with no relief in sight. But this is my kind of weather. I might sit out on the patio, put up my feet, grab an ice cold beer, and read my book later. What do you like to do when the weather is hot??

Time for another of my favorite life hacks. I like sharing them with you. And I like picking up a few of your life hacks too. So feel free to share one.

miniature marshmallows

Do you know what one of my favorite uses for marshmallows is? Well, besides floating them on top of my hot chocolate in the winter. Or adding them to my favorite Watergate Salad.I use the miniature ones for that. But even better than all that is to toss a few of them into your brown sugar. Yep, keeps it soft. Won't dry out. If the marshmallows get hard then just toss in another small handful. Try it!! I guarantee it works!!

  1. That's pretty neat; I'll have to pass it onto my friends who still bake!
What do I like to do when the weather is 115-degrees ... in the shade?
Whimper a lot and try to figure WHAT fugue state I was in when I chose to move to this part of the country.

  2. LOL, I love Myra's comment :)

I didn't know this about marshmallows. I'll have to try it the next time I have brown sugar.

I like a cold beer on a hot summer day, so lately at the end of the day when we are making dinner, we've been opening a beer and just enjoying the refreshing taste :)

  3. Not a fan of the heat, myself, so I'm glad we haven't had much heat yet. But it's coming. I'll have to try the marshmallows the next time I have brown sugar in the house.

    1. I'm not a huge fan of the heat right now Liz. Without my A/C working, I am hating it. Why, oh why, did I ever say that I loved it!! Karma sucks

  5. I hadn't heard about that trick and will have to try it. I bake but not often and the brown sugar goes hard before I can use it up. I used to love heat, but now I'm inside more than not when temps go up above 80. Iced tea is my favorite summer time drink.

    1. I don't bake all that much either. I like to cook but baking isn't my favorite. And those treats really hang around for a long time on my hips!!

  6. Here at the Jersey shore, this week temps are only in the 70's. I am enjoying it but hope it gets hotter by the end of June when we are at the beach house.
    Cool tip about the marshmallows.

  7. I hate the heat. Anything higher than 80 degrees. Tomorrow's forecast is for 93 and I will be tucked into my house with AC after I run my morning errands.

    1. I have always loved it. But I don't spend a lot of time outdoors anymore so that helps!

  8. We're supposed to be hot and humid tomorrow. In the 90's. Seems like we have had very little nice Spring weather this year. It's either been hot and humid or snowing!

    1. That is what I am thinking too. Seems like we go from winter to summer and back to winter!

  9. I hadn't heard about the marshmallow trick. My grandmother used an apple slice on top of the brown sugar. I do what she did. Small piece of wax paper, apple slice atop the paper, then put both into my jar of brown sugar. I just replace the apple slice when I need to. It's good to have a brown sugar hack because the sugar doesn't have to get hard and be wasted. Sorry about your AC.

    1. Cool idea for an apple! I haven't heard that one. Does the apple dry out. Or rot? Whenever my brown sugar gets hard I pop it into the microwave for a bit. That softens it up enough to use! My A/C is fixed. It was just a breaker inside the unit had gotten tripped! He didn't even charge me for stopping by!

    2. Great question about the apple. For the most part, the answer was neither because I was either baking often enough or checking the apple slice often enough. I did see an apple slice start to show signs of spoiling, but it was sitting on the wax paper and the sugar was fine. I like the marshmallow hack. Much easier. I read that a slice of bread works, too. Glad you didn't get charged for the AC service call. They can be pricey.

    3. I've heard that about the slice of bread too. I put a slice of bread in with my sugar cookies sometimes because I don't like how they get hard in the cookie jar. Yes, anytime you call a repairman to your house it can get pricey!

  10. Not heard about this "trick" before for brown sugar. When mine gets hard, I just stick the bag inside the microwave for a few seconds and it softens it up...
Heat - hate it!! We finally got a break for a couple of days and I turned the air off. But today, the heat came back with a vengeance and so did my a/c!! I tend to stay inside a lot when it is this hot... So glad I don't have to get dressed up and go off to work anymore in the summertime!

    1. Oh me too. The nursing home used to be brutal because the elderly don't like cool so they kept their rooms way too warm. We nearly died in the summer!

I am most happy when it is 70 something degrees. Yesterday was high 80's and I hated it:(

  12. Sounds way too warm for me and our air con consists of opening the windows and turning on the fans! Fortunately we don't have too many days of unbearable heat here. Glad you got your ac fixed.

  13. I would eat them. Marshmallows are one food I absolutely can't keep in my house. One of my favorite sugary snacks.

    1. Oh how I like to eat them too. I like to let them get a bit stale, so they aren't as fluffy!
