Kitchen Scissors Life Hack

I like doing things the easy way! Who doesn't? Something I learned along the way was how handy a pair of scissors are in the kitchen. I don't go out and buy those special kitchen scissors (have you seen them?) I just put my old scissors in the kitchen cutlery drainer when they don't cut paper well anymore. And throw away the old pair that's already there.

I use scissors, in the kitchen, for lots of things. I cut open packages. Much easier than following that little "tear Here" nonsense. I use them to cut up chicken into bite size pieces. Just be sure to wash them really well with soap and hot water after you are done. I use scissors to cut up bread, hot dog buns, hamburger rolls, and throw the pieces out back for the birds.

But my favorite use of my kitchen scissors is for salads. I don't have the  patience to doing all that fine chopping that is necessary for a good chopped salad. So I use my kitchen scissors. I buy bagged salad most of the time. And they cut it into big pieces. I like my salad more chopped. So I dump it into the bowl and start chopping with my scissors. I cut up the onions, peppers, and even the tomatoes with my scissors. Yep, I do.

Do you use kitchen scissors? How do you use them? Please share!

  1. Brilliant idea with the lettuce. I use a knife for that, but scissors would work out so much better! I do use scissors in the kitchen for pretty much all you said except cutting meat. They definitely are multi purposeful!

    1. Once you start cutting salad with your scissors you won't do it any other way. I just dump the salad into a bowl and stick the scissors in and start cutting!! I love salad this way!!!

  2. After cutting the chicken, you could run the scissors through the dishwasher. Just to make sure.

  3. Yes I use for opening packets and cutting up meat but hadn't thought about salad - although we often have ice-berg lettuce which I wouldn't be able to cut with my kitchen scissors. Luckily, I have a wonderful old vegetable knife I was given many years ago and that gets through things easy peasy :)

    1. I just cut the iceberg into smaller sections with a knife and snip away with my scissors. So much quicker and easier than with a knife. You have to try it sometime!!

  4. Hi Paula - I still use a knife for most things ... and chop/slice my own salad as I need. I use scissors for cutting out articles, string and opening parcels ... I've given up having separate scissors .. just what I find - when I need! Wash well after use .. if using to cut through bone ... not often though! Cheers Hilary

    1. I haven't tried cutting through a bone with my scissors. You probably could with those 'real' kitchen shears!

  7. Kitchen scissors are indispensable. I use mine a lot too. Years ago a friend of mine taught me how easy it was to cut up pizza slices by using them. The uses are endless!

  8. I use my kitchen scissors all the time. I got a pair from Pampered Chef a long time ago and they come in a case you can mount on a cabinet or wall. Very handy! I use it mainly for cutting open bags but am going to try to use them for other things that you have mentioned!

  9. I use my kitchen scissors LOTS - including for chopped salads. Love 'em. When they get too worn, they are relinquished to other household uses and replaced. (Mine are surgical-sharp in the kitchen.)

For mail, etc., I have a cheap pair of Fiskar knock-offs. ;-)

  10. Well...I must admit I have one pair of scissors with a broken tip on one blade. I use that tip as a screwdriver!!! The scissors work great for cutting, but that broken tip comes in handy from time to time. Saves me a trip to the tool box!

  11. Kitchen scissors are a must! I use mine the same way you use yours, except for the salads. I still rip and tear my lettuce.
I had a pair of "kitchen" scissors but they broke so now I just use regular ol' utility scissors and they work just fine.

    1. I just use the regular scissors. I don't think I have ever owned a pair of actual kitchen shears!

  12. We use our kitchen scissors all the time. My husband gets the kitchen duty most of the time and he has claimed it as his own space. I used to occasionally "borrow" the kitchen scissors for garden chores. He didn't like that - it dulls the blades. So he bought me my own pair for the yard. He doesn't know that I lose the garden ones occasionally and still borrow the kitchen ones--but I know you ladies won't tell on me! We have a tool store called Harbor Freight that sells them for $1. Sometimes they are free with a coupon from the local ad paper we get in the mail. So, it's not too painful to replace them if we abuse them just a little!

  13. I have two pairs of scissors that I keep in my kitchen drawer - next to the sink. They get used for a lot of things - some they probably shouldn't be used for according to my husband - LOL! I'm going to try the cutting up the chicken with them - great idea! But I'll do it when he isn't around - tee hee!

  14. Hmm, I haven't thought about using scissors in the kitchen. Oh, yeah, I have a pair in the kitchen drawer, which I use to cut open packages of whatever. Now, I'll have to rethink this whole kitchen scissors thing.

  15. Great tips!!! We have a pair of scissors we use for everything but I always have to be careful not to touch food with it because I don't know what it's cut before!

  16. I never thought of that! Tom is happy with the bagged variety he buys, but my fresh spinach ... gawd, methinks they could choke a horse with those pieces.
For sure, I'm going to try your hack!

  17. I have two pair. I hate the preservative in bagged salad. But I do my own greens and then put them in ziplock bags for the week. Great idea how to cut green onions!! :)
