Wednesday Hodgepodge-March 2nd Edition

March has arrived to our world! It is like spring here in Kansas. And there are those famous March Winds too. Now let's welcome March by joining with Joyce From This Side of the Pond and participating in Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. February ended with an extra 24 hours in 2016. What did you do with your bonus day?

Nothing special happened at our house. I did some laundry. Ran the vacuum sweeper a bit. Warmed up some leftovers (that is what we do on Monday). And read!!

 2. What's something in your life that's grown by leaps and bounds in recent days, weeks, months, or years? I'm giving you lots of room to come up with an answer here, so no fair passing on this one.

These two have grown by leaps and bounds since they came to live with us in 2008. The picture on the left is the night they arrived. I had nothing for them. I had to borrow clothes to make it through the first few days. They were pudgy, loving, happy little people. And the picture on the right is now. Darian is over 6 feet and Harley is rapidly approaching my height. In just 7 really short years these two have grown!!

 3. Do you read reviews about a film before deciding if you'll see it? Did you watch
The Oscars this year, and if so your thoughts on the program? How many of the Best Picture nominees had you seen prior to the broadcast? (Spotlight, The Martian, The Big Short, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, Room, and Brooklyn) If you watched The Oscars who gets your award for 'best dressed'?

I am really not a big fan of going to the movies. We watch an old movie now and again at home. I haven't seen any of those listed above. I did read the book Room and might like to see this movie. I did NOT watch The Oscars this year. Want to know why?? This year's controversy just put me off. I don't like black privilege any better than I like white privilege. The Oscars are for the BEST regardless of color. Maybe there just weren't any BEST this year in the black race. And making it into what they made it turned me off. Sorry, but you asked!!

 4. When did you last have overnight houseguests? Give us your top three tips on being a good houseguest.

My brother was here in January for a week. He was here to get his house ready to sell. He was a good houseguest because he hit on all 3 of my top tips for being a good houseguest!

1) Clean up after yourself
2) Offer to pay for a meal!
3) Don't expect your host to entertain you 24/7!

 5. March 2nd is Peanut Butter Lover's Day. Will you be celebrating? If so, would you prefer a home made peanut butter cookie, a Reese's peanut butter cup, an old fashioned peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or shall I just hand you a jar and a tablespoon?

I am not a big fan of peanut butter. I have been known to enjoy a PB&J sandwich now and then, but it wouldn't be my favorite. I won't be celebrating Peanut Butter Lover's Day but I would take a Reese's peanut butter cup if you have an extra!!

 6. Why is failure important? Or isn't it?

Yes, I think failure is important. The best lessons are learned after you have failed, in my opinion.

 7. Share with us one fun thing on your March calendar.

We will be having spring break here March 19-27th. I haven't decided on something fun yet. But surely we will do something!!

 8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Politics!! Yea Gads! This years politics are getting on my nerves. Why can't the candidates talk about the issues? Why do they just bash each other? Every time I decide I know who I am going to vote for then they come off being a pig who is running the other candidates down. I hate American politics. Yet I feel it is so important to vote! Come on guys and gal. Get it together!!

  1. Look how those kids have grown! I love seeing before and after photos. I agree with you on the Oscars, as far as it getting so political. I never watch it because those people are so out of touch with reality.

    1. And it has become a stage for their political beliefs. Which are not mine!

  2. My thoughts exactly for #8...it's become so ridiculous! Can't we all just be friends? ')

  3. I spent that extra time going to the dentist and having two teeth pulled and getting my new partial denture - oh be still my heart - LOL!
I've never seen (to my memory) an election year so ugly. I know who I will vote for....
I almost prefer peanut butter right out of the jar. But I also like it with some chocolate!!
Houseguests - my sister is coming for a two week visit again this year. She is already telling me that she wants to cook out 3 times. Uh, are you buying the food and the propane for the grill - ha! So my note to houseguests - don't be bossy! LOL!

  4. The 2008 photo of H and D tugged at my heart. You're doing a great job! And I certainly don't want to ignore Richard's influence either. I LOVE going to movies! I'm sure the grands can't wait til spring break. GN has announced that she has plans to go somewhere. She's exerting her 18-ness.

    1. ooh...we haven't had too much of that 18-ness yet. I will remind him that I am still in charge.

  5. Great answers and I totally agree, especially about the Oscars and politics!

  6. Now that was a Hodge with just the right amount of Podge! I'm just being silly - finishing up work on this Humpday - I don't go to movies either, but I do like plays.

  7. My extra day was pretty normal too. I knoww what you mean about politics. All we hear about at the moment is whether the UK should stay in or opt out of the European Union but it's hard to know the pros and cons when you're not sure who's telling the truth. Have a good week.

  8. So, when's chocolate day? I've never liked peanut butter, but chocolate...

Great with the pics of the kiddos then and now. Have you tried a restaging of any photos? I'm not sure what it's called. You find a photo from years ago, have the subjects pose just as they did in the prior photo, and then post them side by side.

    1. Ah yes, chocolate. I like that much better than peanut butter too!No, I haven't done any re-staging of photos.
      Great idea!!

  9. Ditto what you said about politics!!! Sometimes I worry that we're coming off as a laughing stock to other countries.

That vignette you paint of your first few days with D & H put such a lump in my throat. How blessed you ALL have become together, eh?

PS - Breaks my heart you don't ADORE peanut butter .. but I luv you anyway. :)

  10. I like your rules about house guests :) We haven't had many and they have been pretty good ones; I always prefer to stay in a hotel myself to come and go as I please. This will be Darian's last spring break as a high schooler so of course you'll have to do something fun :) Politics; going to be a long time until November! I really don't know who I'm going to vote for; I wish we could have a redo and start over.

    1. Richard always preferred to stay at a hotel than to stay with people. He liked his privacy!! I haven't yet decided who gets my vote either, Betty!

  11. Hi Paula - I saw Spotlight - brilliant; I enjoyed the Revenant as I wanted to see the filming experience ... and good Leonardo got the award - Spotlight's better! I saw the Big Short too .. I struggled to keep up with that one - probably need to see it again - but I got the gist ... I need to see Joy, Room and Brooklyn and the Danish Girl ...

That's me for now - yes house guests ... always do what you can and join in, help out ... cheers Hilary

  13. I wish I could say I did something special for the extra day we had this year but I didn't. It was nice to know that we had an extra 24 hours though.
Good tips for houseguests! My brother and sister-in-law were here for 11 days in January. My parents are spending the winter here with me so it was a fabulous family reunion. And they are perfect houseguests and are welcome any time. Hope they come back soon!
I didn't watch the Oscars this year because I only saw one of the movies (The Revenent), which is highly unlikely for me. I usually see all the Oscar movies. I love going to movies and just went yesterday to see Michael Moore's new movie Where to Invade Next. If you hate American politics, you'd love this movie. It shows how other countries treat their citizens and they do it so well...and for not much more money than we now pay in taxes. Their tax dollars get them a lot more services and perks than do ours! It's a very eye-opening film. I think all politicians should see this movie. But they won't because many of them hate Michael Moore.
Loved the pictures of your kids. They are adorable!

    1. I haven't been a fan of Michael Moore's but that movie does sound interesting. It is a shame what our country has become, isn't it?

    2. Indeed! It is more than possible to institute change so we could have some of the perks that these other countries have and why they don't do it is beyond me. Too much red tape in Washington to get anything done...

  14. I agree with so much of what you've said. And it's only the first of March! The biggest problem is the election nonsense starts waaaaaaay too early!! It feels like we've been at it for a year now, and the election is still months away. Ugh!

    1. Yes, it starts too early. Every time I find someone I like then in a few days they do or say something stupid which changes my mind!! Sign!!
