Dear School District:
I know that it is time for Christmas break. But, really do we need to give them a half-day out of school today? They will be out of school until January 4th. I don't really think they needed an extra half-day! It just screws up the parents, you know.
Dear Mrs. Nisly:
I love visiting your farm at this time of the year. The fact that you just got in a shipment of Texas oranges and grapefruit makes it even nicer. These are the juiciest oranges we have ever gotten from you. Darian and I shared one and we ate it , standing over the sink, with juice running down our chins and laughing about it.
Dear Mrs. Petersheim:
I am so happy that I saw your sign that read: Fruitcakes here! We were out picking up our fruit and I told Darian, "we are swinging into that drive on our way back." Yours is a true Amish farm. No electricity. Just a kerosene lamp and a wood stove. But your smile and your hospitality lit up the room. The price ($14.50) for a single fruit cake seemed a little steep until I got it home and took a slice. Oh my goodness, worth every single penny. I don't understand why fruitcakes get such a bad rap! It is a little piece of Heaven!!
Friends and family: I know that everyone is very busy at this time of the year. I am sending you all wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope this coming weekend is good to all of you. I will be back on Monday with my Simple Woman's Daybook. Have a wonderful Friday!!
That fruitcake sounds delicious!!! It does indeed wreck havoc on a parent when the school schedule is changed :) I'll be spending the weekend wrapping gifts and trying to pull it all together for Christmas! Can you believe how fast this year has gone!

I need to try to pull it all together for Christmas too! I don't even know what day we are celebrating this year! No, I cannot believe how fast that year has sped by!!
DeleteConsidering that Christmas is a week away, I agree about the half-day. I am told that my mother made the 'best' fruitcake, but I never cared for it. She even did a wedding cake out of fruitcake for someone.
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine a wedding cake out of fruit cake but I suppose if you loved it it would be great! I wouldn't think the half day was so bad but they are getting !6 days out of school as it is!!!!!
DeleteI am not much of a fruitcake person but I do love amish baking. So I would probably give it a try. When I was in school we didn't have half day before Christmas break. We went the whole day. That is kinda of silly of only having a half a day.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great weekend and a Merry Christmas with your family. I actually wrote my own dear Friday letters this week. Its bern awhile. Hope you have a great day.

It is the best fruit cake I have ever tasted!! I am on my way over to vist your Friday letters Stacy. I have missed seeing you!!
DeleteI can't recall ever having tasted a fruitcake ... but believed they were 'terrible' just the same! I think just the sight those candied/jellied pieces of fake fruit had my senses running for cover. LOL.
ReplyDeleteLove your new 'Letters' graphic!
You have to try it at least once in your life!! Thanks. The graphic is from Google and I edited in Pic Monkey!
DeleteI love fruitcake. I am so alone in this passion that I am reduced to those slices that probably never decompose from the big fuel stations on the interstates.
ReplyDeleteI wish you lived close by. I would run you over a piece of this. It would put those truck stop fruit cakes seriously to shame!!
DeleteOranges and giggles with your grandson. What a fun time. And the fruit cake sounds wonderful. My folks made fruit cake together at Christmas time. I grew up loving it. I know it isn't something everyone likes. I'm in the YUM column on that one!
ReplyDeleteThis is a most delicious fruit cake! Wish you were here I would serve you a piece with our coffee!
DeleteWe had a half day on the last day, too. It's because the kiddos are so wound up that having a full day would drive the adults crazy.
ReplyDeleteThat's probably true. They should just surprise them with when the last day is!
DeleteOh, I love fruitcake. Especially when there are a lot of walnuts or pecans in them. They make me think of olden times. And I agree with you about the extra half-day. Long winter breaks are too much of a good thing.
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of nuts in the one that I bought! I think the extra half-day is ridiculous!
DeleteMerry Christmas Paula!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas Wendy!
DeleteI love fruit cake. Our wedding cake was made from fruitcake. It was always the tradition here to have fruit cake for celebration cake but not anymore. Cake making has become such an art and the choice of fillings now leaves you spoilt for choice!
ReplyDeleteYes, cake making is quite an art. I would love to have a bite of a fruitcake wedding cake!!
DeleteI don't know why fruitcakes have such a bad rap either! I love them! I have tasted some hideous ones but most that I have sampled have been fabulous.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to visit an Amish farm. I love their simple lifestyle...although it is hardly simple, I'm sure.
Merry Christmas to you Paula! I hope you have a wonderful holiday season with friends and loved ones...
Michele at Angels Bark
I agree with you Michele about fruit cakes. They have a bad rap and I think most people have not even tasted them. There are bad chocolate chip cookies too. Yet they don't have a bad rep. Merry Christmas Michele. Glad to have gotten to know you this year
