My Simple Woman's Daybook July 6th Edition

For Today...

Today is July 6, 2014. Already a week into the month of July and I have hardly blinked my eye. Did everyone have a wonderful 4th of July weekend? Ours was very nice! And a little bit sad! But the hamburgers on the grill were the BEST!!

Outside my window...

Outside my window is a cloudy but warm day. The weatherman says storms later today. We are right on the edge. We need a spot of rain but I hope the 60 mph winds miss us. Right now the temp is 93* A spot of rain will cool us off. And bring on a bit of humidity! Can't win every time, I guess.

(P.S. update...it is pouring outside right now)

I am thinking...

I am thinking that I need to be cleaning the kitchen and starting some laundry instead of sitting here at the computer. But I have all day! Right?

I am thankful...

I am always thankful for my family! Where would any of us be if we didn't have family? Have you ever thought what life would be like if you were here alone? I don't think any of us would like that much, do you?

I am also thankful for 'spellcheck'. I think I might rely on it a bit too much now. Remember the good old days when we used a dictionary?

I am creating...

I am creating my post and my menu and also starting to write in my planner. The kids will be so busy once school starts. I need a system that will keep them on track. And one that will help them start to take a bit of responsibility for their own schedules.

I am going...

I really am going to the kitchen and the laundry room as soon as this is posted. Really!!

I am wondering...

I am wondering if I want to tackle the fish aquarium this week. I really, really need to completely empty it and start fresh. But that is such a huge job. And it takes all day. I am wondering what I will decide! I have been thinking of moving it into the opening of the fireplace. We don't ever use the fireplace to burn wood. I am wondering what it would look like. Today I may do a bit of measuring and seeing if it will fit. I think it will look cool.

I am reading...

I am still reading The Book Thief. I am enjoying it very much.

I am hoping...

I am hoping to finish my book and find another meaty novel to sink my teeth into.

I am learning...

I am learning to love The Food Network. This week I have falled in love with "Chopped". Any other of you love to watch cooking shows.

In my backyard...

My backyard today is steamy! Really! While it was raining your could see steam rising from the concrete. The geraniums are not liking the heat we have had. Not nearly as many blooms. And sadly the trees have leafed out too much to make the daisies bloom any longer. I didn't plant anything else this summer.

In my kitchen...

Monday...Leftover Monday (spaghetti from yesterday)

Thursday...Taco Crunch Skillet Harley cooks!!

Friday...Shrimp Pasta Salad

Saturday...Ranch Onion Whole Chicken, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli

I am hearing....

I am hearing General Hospital in the background and a passel of birds chirping in the backyard.

A favorite quote for today...

A peek into one of my days...

Today is Monday. A day of recovery from the weekend. It was a busy, fun weekend with Justin and Paige. Paige is a ball of fire compared to the two grandkids who live here. She brings with her lots of energy. And we all need a day to recoup afterwards. But we love the little ball of fire with all of our hearts!!

One of my favorite things...

One of my favorite things is muffins. I just love big, crusty topped muffins. Harley baked some today. Blueberry Cheesecake and Banana Muffins. Two kinds. Not mixed together. Although they might have tasted good mixed together. Nah! I didn't think so either.

From the board room...

This weeks menu comes from the boardroom. I save all the recipes I find on my Pinterest Board. If you haven't checked me out yet you should. I break down all the recipes so I can find them easy. Some I have done over and over so they are favorites of ours. Maybe I should make a Favorites Board!! Do you use Pinterest? I think that is one of the most brilliant ideas of this century. Problem is I can waste hours there just browsing. Do you do that too?

  1. Glad you had a good celebration! Was there ever really anything "good" about using a dictionary? I always wondered what were you to do if you didn't have a clue how to spell a word.

    1. That is exactly what my kids used to say..."how can I look up the word if I don't know how to spell it in the first place?"

  2. I have fond memories of using a dictionary. My grandmother used it to keep us busy looking for words we didn't know how to spell. Makes me smile not to remember it. Glad you had a good holiday, despite some sadness. I agree with you about Ellie's blog.

  4. I haven't really watched The Food Network since they stopped making Good Eats. Now I just watch those in reruns.

I'm on Pinterest, but I don't check it out much at all anymore. I should get back to it.

    1. Pinterest just seems to suck me in and then I waste so much time. But then, time is all I have anymore.

  6. Ooooh, I used to get so cross if I'd ask my parents how to spell something and they'd just tell me to, "look it up."

I'm glad Justin and Paige were there to help buoy everyone's spirits. You're so right about the importance of family. I'll admit, there's times I wish I could go back to being alone and shut out the world -- but I know that wouldn't last more than a couple days. It's a bit frightening to realize there's not that many left!

    I'm off to Honeysuckle Hollow!

  7. PAULA!!! You wonderful, sweet and amazing YOU! I got a notification that you had left a comment on my blog post today ( and the comment was so sweet, I scared the chickens when I jumped up and ran into the house). And now here I am and you wrote the kindest things. THANK YOU! You have no idea how you have blessed my life. I love your blog and every day I cannot wait until you post ( even though I don't always comment...sorry!) I love muffins too, they are one of my favourite things to bake and you can change them up so quickly. I love your fish tank idea, did you try it? How does it look? I do love Pinterest, I have close to 5000 pins, and have lots of boards. I save my favourites in a specific spot and need to try out more of the ideas I have pinned. It is super addictive! Thanks so much for your kind words, and for being such an amazing friend. There is nothing I would like more than to take you out to look for sea glass with me! I hope you have a wonderful week!!! xoxoxoxo Love you!

  9. I like some of the shows on the cooking channel; Chopped is a favorite of mine. I always admire those that can put together a recipe quickly by jut looking at what is available and then in most cases the food tastes good. Sounded like you had a nice 4th of July; and you are right, always so good to have family; I can't imagine not having family.

    1. I don't think I could put together a dish with some of the weird ingredients they are given. But it is fun to watch! And much better than the re-runs on other channels.

  11. I loved your July 4th photos. Mom and I lit sparklers too. Rain here helps a bit but, as you said, can bring more humidity. Hope you are having a great week!

  12. I really like that quote from Eleanor Roosevelt! How true it is!! Some of my kids and I binge watched Chopped for three days straight! It makes you so crazy nervous, but they do such great things with what they have.
