American Sniper, The Movie

Last Night we rented and watched The American Sniper movie. I had to come back here to write a review since I had read the book and reviewed it here. There were those who disagreed with my opinion of Chris Kyle, the author. I did not like the book at all. He came across as very arrogant and full of himself.

I have to say that after watching the movie I have a different opinion of Chris Kyle. He (the actor) did not seem at all arrogant. In fact, he seemed much more down to earth and human. It showed the parts where Chris struggled with the war. I really did not walk away from reading the book with the opinion that actually killing people bothered him.

I still question his ability to continue to leave his wife and kids behind to fight a war in a country that we really never belonged in. It seems that he always put his need to be at war ahead of his family. He even said his love was God, country, then family, in that order! Not, in my opinion, how it should be.

By the end of the movie Chris was shown as a man who had come to terms with Chris, the soldier. I hope this was how it really was in his life. He was very likeable and I shed tears for the loss of this American hero. I am glad I watched the movie. Often I think the books are always better than the movie. In this case, it just wasn't so.

  1. I think for many who make the military their career, they place country above family. I suppose most military spouses should know that going in. I'm glad to hear the film made him more human and likable.

    1. I don't know if I could be married to a man that put his country above his family. But that is just me!!

  2. So, I've no idea why reading this makes me feel so foolishly happy
... except that I really liked the movie and I really (really!) like you. :)
    Wasn't Bradley Cooper's portrayal amazing?

Even knowing the outcome, I cried so hard the first time I think I need to rent the movie.

    Have a great day!

    1. LOL! You make me smile Myra! I would just recommend you not read the book! That way we can both go on loving Bradley Cooper. I like to think, since he spent time with him, maybe that was a true portrayal of Chris Kyle!

  3. Thanks for the review, Paula; we haven't seen it yet, but when we were getting a movie yesterday from Redbox, the people behind us were waiting to return movies; I asked what they had rented and one was American Sniper. They said it was good too. Where we used to live, one of the people in the church we went to who was also in the military knew Chris Kyle. He was very sadden about his death; said he was a one of the best.

  4. I bought the book for my son and he likes it. He is an EMT. I think it is something men that have a passion for service jobs understand better than me.

    1. Both my son (a cop) and my grandson (a future Marine) loved the book. I just didn't. But the movie was powerful, for sure!

  6. I haven't read the book but I thought the movie shared a powerful view from a soldier. The man that goes overseas is never the same man that left. I think that was the most important part was that he wasn't the same person. He didn't know how to be a husband and a family man anymore, he gave his life to the war. Great post, thanks for sharing!

  7. Interesting. I wonder what made the movie better. I guess it's easier to step away in a movie and see the full character, when the book was written from the perspective of someone who had not taken that step away? I don't know.

    1. I think the movie was better because it wasn't just his "words". but the interpretation of a writer. The movie made him more personable. The book was just flat!!
