I am a Quaker!
Since I do not know of any place where I have visited that starts with the letter "Q," I am going to break away from my normal post today and talk about my early religion. Our family was not very religious when I was growing up. Oh we believed in God, but we didn't really practice a religion. I cannot remember what it was that brought me to the Friends Church. But I started going when I was pretty young. And my mom used to say that 'if the church doors were open for something, she knew that was where she could find me.' I grew up a Quaker. It was in the Friends Church in Pratt, Kansas that I was saved. That I accepted our Lord, Jesus Christ as my savior.
The Quakers are also known as The Religious Society of Friends. Thus, the Friends Church. It is one of the oldest denominations in America arriving here in the early 1650's. The Friends have been pioneers in education, prison reform, race relations, and teachings of non-violence. Today many races and nationalities are members of the Friends.
The basic belief of Quakerism is found in a quote by it's founder George Fox, "Christ is Come to Teach his people himself."
I grew up in the Friends Church of Pratt, Kansas and I was married (the first time) in The Friends Church of Hutchinson, Kansas. I am no longer a practicing Quaker. I am a Christian. And to me, that is one and the same.

DeleteMy parents are like that as well, but then, technically, I am Hindu, and the religion is SO old that no one really practices it on a daily basis. But I too, had never heard of Quakers!

ReplyDeleteI visited a Quaker church when we went to Philadelphia this past summer. It was fascinating to learn about the Quakers. We also visited a school and a dormitory too. I love learning about different religions.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up, I didn't find the Quakers to be all that different from others. Now I can see some of the differences.
