Saturday Nine

1) Do you ever fantasize about flying, beyond the rainbow or anywhere else?

No, I never dream about flying. I HATE flying. When we flew to Australia, in 2000, I was so afraid of that 18 hour flight that my doctor prescribed Ativan for the trip. Now there is a wonderful way to fly...all drugged up on Ativan. I don't leave home without it. :)

2) Do you think you have seen The Wizard of Oz more than 10 times?

I know this is going to surprise a lot of people, but I have never seen The Wizard of Oz all the way from start to finish...and I live in Kansas. What is up with that?
3) Which Wizard of Oz character would you most like to dress as for Halloween?

I would have to say the Witch...there are people who would say I didn't need a costume. Hehehehe!

4) What will Trick or Treaters get when they come to your front door?

We don't have very many trick or treaters in our neighborhood. I make goody bags for the grand kids that will come to visit. This year I have 'giant' gala apples to put in them.

5) Did you ever TP a neighbor's house or indulge in other acts of Halloween vandalism as a kid? (Don't worry, that statute of limitations is up.)

Heck no! My mom would have kicked our asses if we had done anything like that. There is a possibility that my brothers did. But not me, I was afraid of my mom.

6) Who annoys you more -- people who never respond to your texts/emails, or those who never look up because they're always checking their texts/emails?

People who are on their phones texting when I am trying to talk to them. Just plain ass RUDE. But then again, people who don't respond to emails...and YOU know who you are.

7) Who was the last person you hugged?

My grand daughter just this morning.

8) What two colors do you like to wear together?

I am not that into matching up my colors or having favorite colors for me to wear, but the granddaughter wore purple jeans with a bright yellow shirt the other day and she ROCKED it! Was so cute
9) Did your alarm clock wake you up this fine Saturday morning?

Not on a Saturday..............only day I get to sleep late. And we slept until 10:30

You never know how strong you are

A favorite saying of mine!
It is right! You never know how strong you are......
Until it is the only choice that
 you have.

I never wanted to be the strong one in the family.

I will admit that I have always wanted to be taken care of.
Even though I grew up in a generation where women burned their bras.
A generation where women fought for equal rights.
A generation where women expected equal pay.
A generation where women WANTED to work outside the home.

I wanted to be TAKEN care of.

My husband always did that.
He paid the bills.
(Hell, I didn't even know what the bills were)
And I didn't want to know.
He shopped at the grocery store.
I hated grocery shopping and he liked it.
So he shopped.
We shared cooking.
We shared the cleaning.
I helped mow the grass.
He helped wash the dishes.
It worked for us and it was wonderful.
When our boys were growing up, I worked at night and he worked in the day.
The boys always had one of us with them.
No babysitters.
Always a parent at school functions or sporting events.
It worked for us.
And it was wonderful.

He made his own doctors appointments and bought his own medication.
I did mine.
He bought his own socks and underwear. His own shirts and jeans.
I bought mine.
He put gas in his vehicle and mine too.
He decided where we were going on vacation and he planned the trip.
And I enjoyed every vacation we ever went on.

When the grand kids came to live with us, (which by the way was his idea) we still shared
all the chores. I worked in the evenings and he was there with them.
He cooked their dinner.
He helped with their homework.
He tucked them in at night and listened to their prayers.

He was STRONG.
And I liked it that way.

And then came that fateful Friday Night of September one year ago.
And I had to be STRONG.
I had to make the decisions.
I had to pay the bills and do the grocery shopping.
And decide what we were going to do when the furnace quit running.
And who to call and how to pay.
I had to put gas in my own car. And check the oil. And learn how to put air in my tires.
I sold his truck and hoped that I made the right decision.
I make his doctors appointments and go along with him.
I tell the doctor how he is and what he needs.
I buy his medications and I administer them.
I help him out of his chair.
I help him out of bed.
I help him with his breakfast, and his lunch, and his dinner.
I help him get dressed in the mornings and undressed at bedtime.
I help him brush his teeth.
I help him shave.
I put on his shoes and I take them off.
I keep my hand on his elbow as he walks through the house.
I lay awake at night and worry...............'how long can I do this?"

But I am STRONG.

Because I have no other choice.

Saturday Nine

The End of Innocence

1) "The End of the Innocence" is one of Crazy Sam's favorite songs. Do you like it? Loathe it? Or is it before your time

I don't think it is before my time, but I did have to Google it to see if I had ever heard of it and I haven't. So I guess I can't really say if I like it or not.

2) Obviously Don Henley was a smoker back in the 1980s. Do you smoke? Are you a former smoker? Or did you never start?

I did smoke. For more than 30 years. I quit in 1999 because we were going to take a 32 day vacation with other couples and I was the only smoker in the crowd. So, rather than going outside to smoke by myself all the time, I quit. And it was HARD. The hardest thing I have ever done, in fact. And I loved to smoke. And I would LOVE to smoke again. You know what keeps me from going back? The smell! Why didn't anyone ever tell me how bad I smelled?

3) Childhood is generally considered an innocent time. In what town did you spend yours?

I grew up in Pratt, Kansas. It was a small town where we could walk wherever we wanted to go. I used to think that the trip to school was at least a mile away, but it was only 4 blocks!

4) Do you abide by "innocent until proven guilty?" Or did you come to your own, pre-trial conclusions about famous defendants like Casey Anthony and OJ Simpson?

I do believe in innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately in this day of 24/7 media that we live in, it is nearly impossible to not form an opinion before the end of the trial. And by the way, I was one of those who REALLY felt OJ was innocent.

5) Is there an old TV show whose cast you'd like to see reunite?

Oh my gosh, there are so many. I would love to see Friends, now all married with kids! And Knots Landing all in a nursing home. Ha Ha that would be funny.

6) Do you know how to ride a horse?

I have ridden a horse, but If I really know how to ride a horse...................NO

7) You're ordering ice cream. Cup or cone?

If I can have a sugar cone! Otherwise; a cup cause I hate those wafer cones.

8) Do you believe a gentleman should help a lady with her coat?

I love it when a gentleman helps me with my coat.....or opens my door....or pulls out my chair

9) Which search engine do you use most often? Google

In Memory of My Baby Daughter

I never got to hear you laugh
you never saw me cry
didnt get a chance to say "Hello"
you never said "Goodbye"
I didn't think that I could feel
so sad, lost and forlorn.
I never knew God chose his Angels
before some of them were born.
Your life was short yet special
I shared it all exclusively
I felt you breathe, I felt you kick.
You were alive inside of me.
Every baby is an Angel
and every angel is divine
God needed one in heaven
He came down and took mine
And although we are not together
we're not really apart
for you'll always occupy a space
deep within my heart.
Time has begun to ease my pain
It's only some days now I cry.
When I wish I could have said "Hello"
and heard you say "Goodbye"

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

1) Do you believe there's only one person (and there ain't no other) for you? Or do you think we can truly love several partners over the course of our lives?

Wow....I am not really sure how I feel about this one. I think you can love people different ways, for different reasons, for different lengths of time. I think love is something that you chose to do, not something that happens to you.

2) Do you have this, or any other, Christina song on your iPod/mp3 player?

I do not have a single Christina song on my iPod. Just not my style of music.

3) Christina Aguilera won a Grammy for her performance of this song. What do you deserve an award for? And who would you thank in your acceptance speech?

I always wanted to be remembered as the best grandma in the world. And the person that I would thank in that acceptance speech would be my very own grandma. Not because she was a great grandma (because she wasn't and I didn't like anything at all about her) but because I wanted to be better than she was. And I think that I am.

4) Christina Aguilera has her own brand of perfume. Do you have a fragrance or scent you regularly wear?

I used to always wear Vanderbilt. But when they started selling it at Walmart I quit wearing it and now I don't have a special fragrance anymore. I never wear perfume.

5) Do you have any allergies?

There are somethings in the spring and the fall air that cause me to sneeze and have itchy eyes, but I don't know what it is. And I am not going to get allergy tested to find out.

6) There's an older lady who proclaims during a TV commercial, "I will give up beer, bread, wine or soda but I won't give up Life Alert!" No, we're not going to debate her diet. Instead the question is: What are some of the staples that are always on your grocery list?

Staples that are always on my grocery list are: milk, bread, water, and Pepsi. I am not giving up my Pepsi.

7) What's your favorite sitcom of all time?

Oh my now this one is a bit hard....I loved Seinfeld, although I did come into it late. And I couldn't get enough of Friends at one time. But my current favorite is Big Bang Theory. Every character makes me laugh, every time.

8) When it comes to your socks, do you prefer solids, stripes or prints?

When I wear socks, I do not care what color or print they are. I usually get them from my grand daughter's drawer.

9) At what age do you consider a person "middle aged?"  And when do they transition to "old?"

To me middle age starts around the age of 40. That is half-way to 80. And 80 is on the way to becoming old. However as far as old age goes.....that is a state of mind. I have known some old 30 year-olds. And I have known some young 90 year olds.

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY: October 4, 2012

Outside my window... Outside my window it is dark but bright because all the stars are twinkling and the moon is shining. And it will get cold tonight. Today's high was 63* and that took place at 2:30 a.m. Then went down to low 50's. Too soon, I think, to be getting this cold.

I am thinking...I am thinking that I really need to concentrate on getting the ficus tree, the corn plant, and the two hanging philodendrons into the house before it is too cold for them. I brought in the orchids today.

I am thankful...I am thankful for each day the Good Lord continues to let our Papa stay with us. He is weak but doing so much better. Even with a cold, he is doing okay.

In the kitchen...Today I was going to make the famous green bean soup for supper. But plans got changed when the location of the final soccer game changed. So it will be green bean soup for supper on Friday.

I am wearing...I am wearing a Kermit tee shirt and jean Capri pants. No shoes.

I am creating...With the help of the grand kiddos today, we got out the fall and Halloween decorations, so I will be creating a few spots in the house to celebrate the season.

I am going...to the bank tomorrow to withdraw a tad and go buy Darian some new Boy Scout pants that fit. I am tired of seeing him in the ones that he wears. And I have had no luck finding used ones.

I am wondering...I am wondering what happens to used Boy Scout pants. They surely don't wear them out. They don't wear them enough to wear them out. Now that is a few 'wear words' in one sentence, isn't it?

I am reading...I am reading Final Vector by  Allan Leverone. It was a Friday Freebie on my Nook Color. So far I am finding it interesting. It is a mystery about terrorists.

I am hoping...I am hoping for another good day for Papa. Today, he didn't feel as good as yesterday. But we take each day as it comes now.

I am looking forward to...I am looking forward to spring. Is that terrible to say that? I do not like cold weather and I know that I am wishing my life away. And every year at this time, I start to dream of spring.

I am learning....I am learning that it would be good for me to become more patient. Heck, I am not just now learning that. I have known that all along. I just need to work on making it happen. Sometimes I just need to laugh at the way things are.

Around the house...oh there is always Around the House. It seems I have lots of plans, and no get up and go. I will be decorating for fall though.

I am pondering...I am pondering the Presidential Debates from last night. Our President seems so out of it. He is out of touch. I don't think he really believes that things in our country are not any better than when he took office. It is time for some new leadership.

A favorite quote for today..."Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing themselves." Tolstoy

One of my favorite things...One of my favorite things is homemade chili. The way my mom used to make it. With saltines and butter. And a tall glass of cold milk. And that is about the only thing I can say that I like about cold weather...........chili, stews, soups!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Friday Justin and Paige will be here and we will have green bean soup. Saturday Paige and Darian both will be at the Buhler Frolic then Paige will come back to spend the night with us. Sunday, Darian ushers at church. Then we start another week.

A peek into my day...This picture was taken last year of the little motley crew. Don't know that they will be dressing up this year.....we will see.
