The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY March 30, 2009

Outside my window...
Outside my window there is still somewheres between 18 and 24 inches of
snow on the ground. We were hit with a spring blizzard on Friday and
Saturday. Some of the drifts are three
or more feet high. Brought our town to
it's knees on Saturday. Things are starting to move again!

I am thinking...
I am thinking that spring is sure taking a long time coming this year.

I am thankful for...
I am thankful for the electricity. Last year when we had an ice storm we lost our
power for 7 whole days. At least
this time we had power and heat.

From the kitchen...
From the kitchen today came our Sunday special of fried chicken,
mashed potatoes, chicken gravy, broccoli with cheese sauce and
cranberry sauce. The kids really love this meal and they like to help
fix it.

I am wearing...
I am wearing my pajamas because when I post this I am headed to bed.

I am creating...
Oh how sad it is that I am not creating a dang thing yet. I am planning
on painting a cabinet soon, does that count.

I am going...
I am going to be glad to go back to work tomorrow. After three days of
being cooped in the house with kids and husband I am ready to get away.

I am reading...
I am reading Night Passage by Robert B Parker. It is a Jesse Stone Novel.

I am hoping...
I am hoping that winter weather is now behind us.

I am hearing...
I am hearing the 10 o'clock news on the TV coming from the other room.

Around the house...
Around the house I used the vacuum cleaner this weekend to get a lot of
dust and cobwebs from the ceilings and
baseboards. And I completely cleaned
the living room. (again)

One of my favorite things...
One of my favorite things is seeing the greens of my hostas poking through
the ground. And now they are covered with snow.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Working on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have an appointment to
get my haircut on Tuesday. My youngest son and his daughter will
be here on Tuesday and Wednesday. Hoping for a day of relaxation
on Thursday!

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

My patio as it looked today.....won't be sitting out there anytime soon!

Saturday Nine

Saturday 9: Inside the Actors Studio
The host of the famous Bravo series, actor, professor and host James Lipton asks actors these 9 questions (among many others). Today we will ask you those questions!

1. What is your favorite word?

My favorite word is actually two words...it is
intermittent claudication! Simply means calf muscle pain! Don't you love
it when medical people have to talk in a foreign language?

2. What is your least favorite word?

My least favorite work is fuck. I think using it once in awhile is okay but when it is used over and over and over.....I hate It! I once made my youngest son write an essay about why he used the word. It was hilarious and sad at the same time because it was too true!

3. What turns you on, creatively, spiritually, or emotionally?

I am not at all creative but it is my family that turns me on both
spiritually and emotionally.

4. What turns you off?

Now days what turns me off is the smell of cigarette smoke on people.
I was a long lifetime smoker who quit nine years ago. I never realized
until I quit how bad I smelled. That alone will keep me from ever going back to smoking again. Now when my grand kids come from their moms house the first thing I do is wash them and their clothes. My son says "what do you think we smelled like, mom?" I just say..."when you know better you do better." Oh how I loved smoking though.

5. What is your favorite curse word?

My favorite cuss word is fuck. I know, I know, I just said I hated it! What I hate is how over-used it is.

6. What sound or noise do you love?

The sound I most love to hear is my grand kids laughing.

7. What sound or noise do you hate?

The sound I most hate is "Code Blue" paging on the overhead pager.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I would love to be a PI (Private investigator) and I think I would be
very good at it.

9. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

Welcome!

To play along go here

The View outside my Door

Here is the view outside my door.
We have a one block visibility.
They are forecasting 10-16 inches of snow.

Wednesday's Walk

On Wednesday's I try to make a memory post. If you would like to join, then

When my boys were little they loved to play like they were cowboys.
I used to think that all little boys were born with a finger that can shoot.

Danny, my oldest son, was the first to introduce me to the cowboys. When he was
only three he had these three imaginary friends whose names were Frank and Jessee James
and Billy the kid. These three hooligans spent a lot of time at our house. There were many
times that the table had to be set to include them at dinnertime. And what a fit Danny would throw if we didn't go along with sitting up the dinner table for all of them. I used to have to find make-shift chairs that would sit at the table. What a vivid imagination he had.
The picture above was taken of him when he donned his first cowboy hat and boots.
They belonged to a visiting great-uncle. He told him long, detailed stories about
cowboys and that began the love of the cowboy. Many afternoons were spent riding wild horses and shooting at the bad guys as he went. Although he never considered the James brothers to be bad guys because to him they were friends!
As you can see by this picture he was still a cowboy as he grew older. But Mickey
Mouse came into his life then too!

When Danny was four his little brother, Justin, was born. He really wasn't all that interested
in him because he was "a baby". But one day Justin became a cowboy.
Here is Justin wearing another Uncle's cowboy boots and hat.
The boys spent hours upon hours running through the house, out the back door,
riding whatever they called a horse at the moment, shooting their (fingers) guns, and taking out the bad guys.
Now they are all grown. Their cowboy days are over. Wonder if they ever think about
Frank, Jesse, and Billy!

Outside my window it is very dark. The day is over. Not as cold and you
can feel that spring is in the air. The sky is clear and there are millions
of stars
twinkling.

I am thinking...
I am thinking of all the things I would like to accomplish this spring
and summer. It is time to make a list.

I am hearing the sounds of an old hoot owl that lives in a tree across
the street. The kids and I have gone out with a flashlight at night trying
to find him but we never have. We listen from the office and try to guess
where he must be.

Around the house...
I started my spring cleaning this weekend. I have completed the kitchen. It looks

with lids. The refrigerator sparkles and all old leftovers have been trashed. All the cabinets are washed down. Even cleaned the ceiling and the ceiling fan. Oh how good a clean kitchen feels.

Wednesday's Walk

Come on and take a walk down memory lane with me and click on the picture above
if you would like to join us or read other peoples memories

At this time of the year a favorite memory of mine always comes up.
I live here in Kansas where we are part of what is called Tornado Alley.
I have never even seen a funnel cloud, because as soon as the weather
starts to look bad, I am busy getting ready to go to our shelter.
You see, I am afraid of storms. And I probably got that from my mother.
She wouldn't admit that she was afraid of storms, but she was.

When I was a kid
we lived in a housing complex where the apartments were made of cinder blocks.
We didn't have a basement. There was a common shelter house you could go
to when there were storms out but we didn't go there very often.
Our storm shelter inside the apartment was either in the long, closed in
closet that we called a pantry. Or inside the shower stall in the bathroom. We
didn't have a bathtub just this big closed in shower stall.

One year, I think I was somewhere around 10 or 11...mom had been working and on
her way home she heard there was a tornado on the ground in Nashville. That is
a very tiny little town near where we lived. It is the town where 4 of us were born.
So mom raced home to save her family. She came into the house screaming for all
of us to get into the closet or the shower and to do it fast.
When my mom yelled out orders, we did what she told us too, although I am really
sure we wondered if she had lost her mind or if this was just a drill.

After standing there in that closet, with barely any light coming in, after waiting and nothing
happened we finally crept out to look outside. Nothing! Nothing at all going
on out side. Cloudy but that was all.

We later found out that the tornado was on the ground in Nashville.
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE that is.
We never let mom live this one down.
I remember the last time I talked to her about this. She was in the nursing
home by now. When I retold the story, mom smiled and said
"That never happened"

"I must learn to love the fool in me--
the one who feels too much,
talks too much,
takes too many chances,
wins sometimes and loses often,
lacks self-control,
loves and hates,
hurts and gets hurt,
promises and breaks promises,
laughs and cries.
It alone protects me against that utterly self-controlled,
masterful tyrant whom I also harbor
and who would rob me of human aliveness, humility, and dignity but for my fool."

Wednesday's Walk

Click on the picture above if you want to join us or read others memories.

When My grand-daughter, Paige, was three years old we took her on a short trip with us to Colorado. She was so excited about getting to go with Papa and Granny. We had lots of things for her to do in the car and we planned to drive from our town to Canon City, Colorado all in one trip. It is about an 8 hour drive but we figured with a three year old it would probably take longer. We stopped at the state line so that she could have her picture taken with the Colorado sign. I can remember her saying "Grandma, Colorado looks just like Kansas!"
We finally arrived at the motel and she was one happy little girl to finally be out of the car. Plus
there was a swimming pool and what three year old doesn't like to swim.

That first night when we went to the restaurant to eat she had to take along her newest friend,
Pinky Pie. A few years later when it was time to go through the mountain of stuffed animals that she owned she brought Pinky Pie to my house and I sleep with her every night. Paige loves the idea that her granny sleeps with a stuffed animal.

And here she is on the way home intently listening to her music on her radio. She has the most beautiful curly hair and chubby cheeks. I will always remember her as she was on this trip.I have always told my grandkids that I love them "all the way to the moon" and then they try to come up with something that could be farther than the moon to tell me.....After we returned home from the trip to Colorado when I would tell Paige..."I love you all the way to the moon" she would answer and "Grandma, I love you alllllllllllllllllllllll the way to Colorado!"
