Currently.....It's Cold!!

Outside my window...

The sun is shining!!!! Yes! It has been a dreary few days with lots and lots of rain. And I mean lots. We have had much flooding. I live higher up than the town so it was only in my ditches and yard. Harley had to take a longer way to work because the main road to the nursing home was closed due to water over the road. And then the water went down. And yesterday it snowed. According to the National Weather Service it was 1898 the last time it snowed this early in Kansas City. We are a ways from Kansas City but I don't remember too many snows this early here in Hutchinson. The ground was covered (didn't stick to the streets) and it's all melted today. The temperature right now is 44* with a light wind. Cold!!

Pondering..

My youngest son has found out he has 5 bulging discs and servere spinal stenosis and a cyst putting pressure on his nerves. They are going to try some compression therapy and PT first. I hope no surgery. All prayers and good thoughts appreciated. It's always something, isn't it?

Watching...

I have binge watched Season One of Shamless on Netflix. Not yet sure if I like it enough to watch 7 more seasons. Time will tell. What I have been loving is You Tube on my TV. So much better than watching on my phone or my desktop. I bought FireStick from Amazon and I am trying it out to see if I can get rid of Cox cable TV. (I will have to keep it for my Internet). Do any of you have experience with Firestick? With Hulu? Sling? All advice accepted.

Reading...

I finished Between Black and White by Robert Baily *** and started (again) Ghosted: A Novel by Rosie Walsh. I decreased the speed of her reading to see if I will enjoy it more on Audible. I also just downloaded In Pieces, by Sally Field to listen on Audible.

Planning....

I don't have many plans right now but some coming down the road. I think!

What's in the kitchen...

Tonight, I have some leftover Taco meat and I will be making myself a Tostado for dinner. Thursday will be my Blue Apron delivery so that will take care of a few days. Otherwise, I am going to take it one day at a time.

A quote to share...

A final thought...

As many of you know, I had a stillbirth. Yesterday she would have been 44 years old. I took a trip to the cemetery and had a peaceful few minutes of remembrance. I left some pink and purple flowers and a birthday crown on her grave site. Tonight I will light a candle in honor of her and all the other babies amongst the stars. You can read my first blog post about Elaine here if you are interested.

  1. How nice you had some quiet time there at the graveside. Right you are about the cold. It turned here about 3 days ago, and has been ugly wet and gray since. But, thankfully we've not flooding and no hint yet of the white stuff. Hope that doesn't mean you're in for a really bad winter with it starting this early. left overs tonight here too, meatloaf for me and chicken pot pie for hubby. He loves them, me not so much. I've heard of firestick, but no knowledge or experience with it. But, cable is getting pretty pricey, hope it works out well for you.

    1. My quiet time at the graveside was quick and easy. It was raining and it was cold. But I try not to miss her birthday! And Christmas! And usually Memorial Day!

  2. 44 years … oh, but time is a thief. What IS it with our (no-so) little boys and their bodies going to pot. (lol, that's what my mom always called it.) I don't know about you, but he's so stubborn and I feel so helpless. Of course, I'm happy to hold Justin in my prayers. Son and his wife have a Firestick, but I don't know much about it. Cox Cable in Arizona was becoming ridiculously expensive.

    1. My not so little boy has torn his body up with years of playing football in high school and college. And chasing criminals!! Cox is disgustingly expensive. I think these streaming things like Firestick will do them in.

  3. Always sad to lose a child. My son and dil lost their first before Charlie was born. I waited 50 years to have spinal surgery after an injury. Wish I hadn't waited so long. Hope his therapy works.

    1. My brother has spinal surgery and did NOT have a good outcome. So I am leery! I am glad it worked for you.

  4. I'm sorry for your loss.

I have no experience with streaming on TV as my TV is so old I can't stream to it. Well, I could buy a Roku.

But, from people I know, they've said they loved cutting the cord. There's a reason cable companies are losing customers. They say the Firestick is great. Amazon has lots of great programming. And you can get most prime time TV via Hulu. If you look online, there are always tips to getting the current big thing live streaming (Super Bowl, Oscars, playoffs, etc). You might not miss having cable.

    1. Thank you Liz. I think you are right that I won't miss cable. But I am going to take my time before I cut the cord and make sure it is what I want to do. I have been researching it on the Internet but I also like to get opinions from people I trust.

  5. We haven't had snow here yet, but it's cold enough. I'm just enjoying our beautiful sunny skies the past few days. I'm not ready for snow! I did not know you had lost a child to stillbirth. I'm really sorry for your loss and I'm glad there is a month dedicated to remembering those precious lives.
As for watching TV shows and movies, we use AppleTV to rent movies, and of course, there's Netflix. That's all I know ;)

    1. Yes, Netflix is wonderful. I've had it for some time but really didn't start to use it much until Harley left home. I watch too much TV! But it is what I do!

  6. We got rid of Cox Cable this past March. We still have its internet and I have to have a landline for work so we go through them. Haven't missed it at all. We just got an antenna that picks up local stations and we watch Netflix on either the laptop or the tablet. Did get Amazon Prime too for a bit to see which one we want to keep between Netflix or Prime. I have a friend that has Hulu and she really likes it.

Will pray for Justin. These days it seems like they are in and out of the hospital so quickly after spine surgery with pretty much good results.

I can't imagine any parent's loss of a baby or young child. I'm sure even after 44 years it still is something you think of so very often.

    1. I've been thinking about the antenna thing too! I need to talk to some local people and see what they think. I have Amazon Prime too so I have those videos. I think there is probably too many shows to watch. Yes, even after 44 years I think of her often. I never got to hold her. Or hear her cry or really get to know her. But I carried her under my heart and felt her move for many, many months.

  7. Paula, I know you're a nurse, but let me butt in anyway. Please have your son find a top neurosurgeon to consult on the best spinal surgeon. My spine was crushed at C4 by a bone spur grown one and a half times around. Crushed disc, etc. A snap, like in a car accident, would have been total paralysis. This all was 2002, 16 years ago. They replaced the disc with cadaver bone and I wore an evil collar for many months. But, all is well now. I've never regretted over ruling my PC and consulting with the best neuro guys I could find. All the best to your son.

  8. It has turned very cold here too, but no snow. Hopefully we won't see that until late November. The trees are sill very loaded with leaves and that could cause some problems. Will definitely pray for you son and my sympathies to you on your loss. I lost a son last year, but he was almost 45 when he died. No matter their age they are still the babies we carried.

  9. The rain is still going and going here in Dallas and the temps went cooler on Sunday night which is about time!! We went from 89 to 40 overnight. I am happy to finally have fall temps.
I'm so sorry for your loss and send big hugs.

    1. It has stopped raining here in Kansas. And we only had one day of snow. We are back to normal fall weather. I don't mind the fall temps. It is winter I hate. Thank you Holli for your kind words. They mean a lot to me.

  10. I'll be praying for you son.

I used to have Hulu but didn't like it much so switched to Netflix. I have Apple TV and love the YouTube channel (not YouTube videos) and that's where I stream all the shows I watch like This Is Us, the 3 Chicago shows, Survivor, and a few new shows, The Cool Kids, The Neighborhood, & New Amsterdam to name a few, and they are all very funny. I didn't like the Apple TV remote so I checked out the Fire Stick and Roku. I decided to go with Roku and LOVE it! My daughter has the Fire Stick and she's happy with it.

I have the audio of In Pieces by Sally Field on hold at my library. I've been a fan of her's since Gidget & The Flying Nun when I was real young.

I love Taco Bell's Spicy Tostadas. They're so good! I make them at home sometimes but I like TB's so much better. I'd love for you to share your recipe with us.

I had no idea about Elaine, I'll go read your post. I have 2 sisters that lost a baby and I know how hard it was for them, and all of us. Sending you a big HUG!

  11. Keeping my fingers crossed that your son can avoid surgery, but if he can't he should spend time finding the best surgeon he can. To loose a child is the hardest loss of all - I can only imagine since it is not part of my experience. My thoughts are with you.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I cannot imagine what the loss of a child feels like especially in circumstances like yours where you are among other Mothers with their newborns. It must have been so hard.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hi Paula - first I sincerely hope your son can be helped and can avoid surgery. I am glad you were able to get to the cemetery to spend some time with your child and your thoughts of those times all those years ago ... take care and I do hope the cold will go - Hilary

  17. 44 years! Glad you had some time to go to the cemetery. I hope your son gets the care he needs... hopefully no surgery. Bulging discs are NOT fun. I'm no help whatsoever with Hulu, Sling, etc. Maybe when I retire. I've been having a tough time leaving comments on blogs, but not for the lack of trying. So far, anonymous works! goodnightgram
