Book Reviews

I've been going through audio books like crazy. And cleaning the garage. And doing some yard work. And some house cleaning. Best time to do audio books is when you are busy and you don't really need to think about what you are doing. I have gotten all four of these books, along with their audio, free from my Kindle Unlimited app from Amazon!

An Invisible Client by Victor Methos is about a high powered personal injury lawyer, Noah Byron. Noah takes on the pharmaceutical business over the wrongful death of a young boy! He gets to know the boy and his mom and really learns to like them. He also meets a young intern lawyer and falls in love. So it's a love story plus a legal thriller. Had good, strong characters. A great, interesting plot. And a satisfying ending. Was an emotional and satisfying read. For me that is *** 3 stars. (you can see my star ratings in my sidebar).

The Lilac Bouquet by Carolyn Brown is a story which involves a town of secrets that go back more than 60 years. Emmy Jo, the main character, is a young nurse who takes a job caring for an old codger whom the town doesn't like. And he doesn't like anyone in the town. But he's very, very rich. She discovers the secrets that helps her uncover her own heritage and has a fantastic ending. This is one of those books that will just make you feel good. We all need those once in awhile, don't you agree? Another 3 *** book.

Between Me and You by Allison Winn Scotch is
a novel written with the perspectives of the two main characters. Ben Livingston is a writer and Tatum Connelly is an actress. This book was kind of a fluff read. But I enjoyed it. They fall in love and marry. They have a child. And then her career explodes while his doesn't. I can't say I loved the book. It was too long. And too repetitive. But it ended in a 'feel good' kind of way. So 2 1/2 stars is the best I can do.

Last is the book I just finished. Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine. My kind of book. It is a thriller. I stayed up a lot at night going back and forth from the book to the audio. Couldn't wait to get to the end. Was really,
really ready for justice. The story is about Gwen Proctor (aka Gina Royal) who was married to a horrible serial killer from Wichita, Kansas. She doesn't know he is a serial killer until a car misses a turn in the road and crashes into their garage and exposes his killing place. He is arrested and put on death row. She is arrested and charged as his accomplice. She is acquitted. But he has fans who stalk her as she moves around the country trying to protect her kids. Good book! But to be fair I have to tell you it ends with a cliff hanger. The good news is the next book is already available and I am starting it tonight. This book will get **** stars from me.

Happy summer reading!

  1. I need to reset my Goodreads tracker. Somehow it stopped working on my blog. Glad you are finding good books to read. I just quit reading one on page two when I discovered it dealt with a religious cult. Nope. Too many other books to read.

    1. I like to learn about all kinds of things. I don't mind books about religious cults. It is good to see what their tactics are. But it's also good that we all like different books!

  2. All seem like good books! I've been "checking" out ebooks through our local library and really liking the selections I've been reading. Currently reading The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg. They also offer some library ebooks as audible books but haven't done that yet since I tend to fall asleep if I'm listening to a book, but might try one when I'm exercising on the treadmill; hopefully that wouldn't put me to sleep :)

    1. I easily fall asleep listening to an audio book, as well. What I do is set the sleep timer and then I can easily go back to what I last heard. I also like the books that offer both the reading and the listening versions!

  3. I read Stillhouse Lake and the second book. BOTH are excellent. Question: You said you got them all free from Kindle Amazon Unlimited - and you listened to them on Audio. With Kindle Unlimited it is just the Kindle copy that is free - correct? If there is a way to get the audio version free, let me know. I haven't seen that audio option on Kindle Unlimited. Or maybe I misunderstood. I do love Kindle Unlimited. It exposes you to lots of authors you wouldn't necessarily read - without risking money. I love exploring an author's first book in the series and if I like it I am happy to purchase others from them - and then even some of the follow up books are free. It is a great deal. Thanks for the reviews.

    1. Many of the books on Kindle Unlimited (which really isn't free, I pay $9.99 for it) offer the read/listen for free version. Not all of them. But many. I just look for that!

  4. I had Stillhouse Lake on my Kindle but deleted it because I didn't think I'd like it. Your review makes me want to get it again.

  5. Always fun to come here and see what you've been reading. I have to agree with you about listening to books while doing chores. It makes the time so pleasant. I've been tidying the garage, too!!! Now... if I livevd in Kansas and read about a serail killer in Kansas... I might not be able to sleep. But happy summer reading back to you. Despite my work, I am reading non-work books when I can squeeze them in.

    1. We had a pretty major serial killer in Wichita Kansas for real. He called himself BTK (for Bind Torture Kill). He murdered 10 people between the years of 1974 and 1991. When they caught him it was scary to find that he was a Boy Scout leader and was the President of his church's council. Goes to show you just never really know a person.

  6. I, too, love thrillers … but a cliff hanger? Noooo, I'd go with the Lilac Bouquet. (He sounds like my own grumpy pants DH. Lol!)

    1. The cliff hanger won't be so bad if I have the next book ready to go. If I had to wait for it to be written it would be HORRIBLE!

  7. Lots of reading. Cool. It's good when you find books you enjoy. And thanks for the cliffhanger warning. Cliffhangers piss me off when they're sprung on me.

    1. Yes, I would have been pissed off big time if I hadn't known the next book was already available.
