My October Favorite Things

Another month is gone. And I have more favorite things to tell you about.

I have discovered a new podcast this month. It is called Pantsuit Politics. It is a bipartisan political podcast with two women, one from the left and one from the right. They don't call each other names. They don't shout. They just tell it like it is. I listen to this on my phone with the app Podcasts from the Apple store. Love this app!

My favorite snack for the month is not new. But I usually only enjoy it in the fall. And that is honey crisp apples with peanut butter. Yummy! Honeycrisp has become my new favorite apple. I used to only buy Gala but this year I took a liking to honecrisp. They were developed by the University of Minnesota to be grown especially in cold climates. I like them because they are 'crisp'. I hate a mooshy apple. How about you? And we buy those little snack cup sizes of peanut butter because I can get them at the Dollar Tree for $1 for eight little tubs. Good price.

Do you eat snack bars at your house? Like granola bars? Or grab one to go as you run out the door? I like one in the morning with my coffee. Or in the afternoon as a pick me up. But I am not a big fan of the granola-type bars. When we were on our Whole 30 last year I discovered Lara Bars. They are a bit pricer than normal granola bars. But so worth it in my opinion. My favorite is the Apple Pie. Or the Cherry Pie! Yum!

My granddaughters knew about this next favorite long before me. I just got one while we were at the Kansas State Fair in September. It is called a PopSocket! It helps make your phone easier to grip. Or turns it into a stand. Or you can just play with it. I do that a lot. I like the 'popping' sound it makes. I only have one on my phone but I do like the idea of having two and wrapping your earbuds around them. Hmmmmm might have to buy another one. Do you have a Popesocket?

My favorite essential oil this month has been Peppermint by Better Homes and Gardens selection at Walmart. I don't think it is as strong as the ones I purchased from Grove Collaborative but I like diffusing it while I am at my desk. Peppermint is supposed to invigorate the mind and the senses while bringing a feeling of peace. I just like the smell! I've also added it to the lavender which I diffuse at night and it gives a pleasing aroma. Do any of you use essential oils? What are your thoughts?

I finished listening to Jane Eyre on Audible during October. I will be sharing my review soon. I loved this audio book. I had never read the novel itself. I tried to once and I just couldn't get into it. But, after listening to the book on Audible, I think Jane was a strong, independent lady who was long before her time. And it's a great love story!

That it folks. My favorites for October. Now it's your turn to tell me what your favorites were. I love hearing from you!

  1. I used to eat snack bars but haven't in a few years. I love Golden Delicious apples myself. I've seen ads about the PopSocket but haven't bought one yet. I might sometime though. Have a great weekend!

  2. I have 4 apple trees. My favorite is the golden delicious. My red delicious are good, as well, but the golden is so sweet and juicy. I am not a fan of mushy apples, either. To me the best apples are the ones "left behind" after all the picking is over. An apple left to ripen completely is just so good! I love audio books. My son lives in Minnesota and has me on his library card. Our local library is small and has limited audio books .... and they charge me because I live outside the city limits. I have the Overdrive app on my phone and it allows me to listen while I go about all my chores during the day.

    1. I have not checked into getting the audio books at the library yet. I really need to do that!

  3. Love the pop thingy. Does it go flat on the back of the phone so it can be put in a phone case? I saw those at the store and thought it would be great to hold the phone while taking snaps. Also, essential oils. I really got into them when when we moved to this property. I have a whole room of jars filled with potpourri and use the oils to sent them. Peppermint is my holiday scent. Love it. I need to try lavender with it. Right now I mix it with clove and Spearmint. Yummy smells.

  4. We like Braeburn apples, tart and crisp! I like Brookside Bars...really yummy! No smells are enjoyed here as we both get headaches and it is hard for my husband to breathe. No phone either, my husband has one but I try never to answer it:)

  5. I've been eating honeycrisp apples for at least ten years. They are the best, imo. And Charlie and I both like them with peanut butter. I always have Fiber One oats and chocolate bars in the house.

  6. Hmmm, I would have guessed your favorite apple would be the....Paula Red! ;-) JK. I like Braebuns and Pink Ladies and what's not to love about the U of MN apples for cold climates? Yea MN! I have never had a Lara Bar - seen , yes - eaten no. Not sure why. I have never seen or heard of the Popsocket. Maybe GN has. I'll have to ask her. My favorite things....those little battery operated tea lights. Love 'em! And I love the free coffee at my local grocery store...not even a donation jar for the coffee, just free. I love Nantucket Cranberry Pie and three-day weekends, which I will get next weekend.

  9. Your apple picture reminded me of my favorite CNN commercial. Don't know if you have seen it. A single apple on the TV screen on a white background and a voice saying - The is an Apple. People might tell you it is a banana. But it is not. They may say banana, banana, banana, over and over again. They may yell BANANA loudly. But it is an apple! Then a simple statement appears on the screen "Facts First". I LOVE the statement it makes.

  11. I love apples and dip too, but usually go for caramel instead of peanut putter. I like peanut butter with celery and carrot sticks so may have to get some of those little to go packets for myself. You always have something new to share. Here it's pretty much the same old same old.

    1. The caramel dip was Richard's favorite. I like it too but the peanut butter is better for me!

  12. The only snack foods I have around are apples. Boo hoo when the honeycrisp are out of season. The others have way to much salt or sugar or preservatives.

  13. A great variety of favorites, Paula! I, too, hate a mealy apple. I tend not to buy anything in single servings, but that does seem a good price. I don't like any granola bars. Not big on scents that mimic foods, but peppermint I do enjoy.

    1. I agree with the buying in single servings. Usually just too expensive. And I could get more out of a big jar of peanut butter. But these are nice for on the go!

    1. Yes, they do! But you probably wouldn't like what they both have to say. I don't understand her saying Bernie was gypped. He isn't even a Democrat!

    2. But Bernie is and did run against Hilary as a Democrat.

    3. Yes, he did. But I think he is an Independent!

  16. I started collecting essential oils with peppermint and lavender: apply behind the ears (with a carrier oil) to induce sleep. I now have several others - scents I like as well as some to help reduce pain.

My husband is currently reading Jane Eyre. He has numerous classics on his Good Reads list, and it was time. I read it twice, and preferred it when I read it as an adult. My favorite of that sort of "coming of age" book is Tess of the D'Urbervilles, though.

    1. I've never put it on my skin. What kind of carrier oil do you use. I enjoyed Jane Eyre. Don't think I would have liked it at all as a teen!

  17. I've seen those popper thingies at school. It seems like many of the kiddos have one. I kinda do as well. Do they permanently attach to the back, or can they be removed?

    1. They can be removed and replaced as needed.
