Outside my window...

Today the sun is shining. We haven't seen sunshine for several days now. It is 47* I do not detect any wind so that is a good thing. We have gotten into the 20's already. My ficus tree is in the garage. So it has been saved from the freeze. I need to move it into the house.

Pondering..

I am pondering our weekend. It was supposed to be such a big weekend for Harley. She was going to the high school's winter formal. She got all dressed (pictures to follow) picked up by her date and headed to the restaurant for dining before dancing. But it was Not to be. She got sick at the restaurant shortly after the salad arrived at the table. BUT, she is a trooper. And she was going to this dance. So they headed to his house by the school and had pictures with his mom/dad. Then they went to the school for the dance. They had to stand in line outside before the doors opened. And she was sick again. And again. And again. Finally common sense kicked in and she came home. Where she was sick for the next 6 hours of non-stop dry heaves. Finally all was quieted with diffusing lemon oil and drinking ginger tea. Poor kid. This was her First Winter Formal. And her last Winter Formal (she's a senior). Her cute little beau told her he would take her out again in her fancy clothes when she is feeling better. (And there is still prom in the spring).

Watching...

I am on season 11 of Grey's Anatomy on Netflix. So almost caught up. The things I am learning are: I don't really like Meridith. I am not that in love with Derek (yes, I know he dies soon) The focus on so much sex in the hospital is annoying to me as a nurse. I can guarantee you that didn't go on (well, not to that degree) at my hospital. We were way too busy and too understaffed. But then I'm a nurse and these are doctors!!! Maybe the doctors had more time!!

Reading...

I am still reading Marathon. I have finished listening to Jane Eyre. I have started listening to The 100-Year Old Man Who Climbed out the Window by Jonas Jonasson. I will review Jane Eyre soon.

Learning...

The lessons we are learning, every single day, are almost over-powering. Another shooting. This time in a small rural church in Texas. What are we supposed to learn from all of this death? Are we learning? Or are we just continuing to hate? I just don't know anymore. It is too much. Will our country soon try to discuss some kind of gun control. Why are weapons being sold that can kill so many in such a short period of time. Why are they not federally regulated. I don't know. I don't think it is about mental illness. I don't think shootings like this are political. I think it is pure evil. How do we counteract such evil??

Planning....

The plans are formulating for Thanksgiving. Can't decide whether I will go or I will stay. That should be a song. Maybe it already is.

Drinking....

I am currently drinking my second cup of Starbucks Caffe Verona with a healthy splash of French vanilla cream. I got these little K-cups at a pretty good price. And they are goooooooood!

What's in the kitchen...

Can you believe I have not made out my weekly menu yet? For dinner tonight I am making meatloaf cupcakes topped with mashed potatoes.

A final thought...

With all the things that are happening in our world, our country, our states, our homes....what have you found to be the best way to not let 'things get you down'?

  1. So sorry Harley got sick. I hope she's better. I love Starbucks coffee but have never tried Caffe Verona. Love your quote and photos! As soon as I pull myself out of a "down" slump, something else happens and I'm back there again.

  2. I don't listen to much news these days. It isn't that I want to stick my head in the sand, I just feel powerless. I'm a democrat but not so far to the left that I want total gun control. I think these automatic weapons need to be banned. To go into a church and kill people like that? No place is safe any longer. I simply cannot wrap my mind around such a mindset. Besides not watching much news, I try to focus on all the good things.

    1. I watch the news because I want to be informed. But, I agree there is not much we can do. There is so much our lawmakers can do but they won't. It is so sad!

  3. What a nice young man to be so understanding when Harley was sick! You and I are working on the same book: The Hundred Year Old Man..... I started it a long while back and then got too busy to get very far, so I picked it up again. Lovin' the peeks at Sr. pix! How do I keep from getting down about the world? Spend as much time with GN as I can, knit, read, listen to music and limit my news intake.

    1. All good ideas Gram. I am enjoying The Hundred Year Old Man so far. I have to keep going back to chapter 3 because I keep falling asleep while listening. I need to listen more during the day time I guess. Yes, Isaiah is a good young man. It helps that he is already out of school and just not really interested in these things. He was only going for her in the first place!

  5. Harley looks so pretty, too bad she got sick. I hope her beau takes her out again!
The fellow in Texas was obviously mentally ill and the Air Force didn't report him as a felon...mistakes all the way around. He never should have passed the background checks. In my opinion anyone that has been accused of domestic violence should not have a gun...we had a tragic happening here a few years back...a couple divorced...he was angry...she wanted to survive his abuse...he killed her one night as their son ran from the house. He then shot himself. So I think domestic violence needs to be addresses and mental health too:)

    1. I think part of the gun problem in the USA is we don't have federal laws that go across all the states. We are allowing the states to each make their own laws. Yes we really do need to address domestic abuse. It pisses me off that we want extreme vetting of people entering this country but we don't do 'extreme vetting of everyone who wants to buy a gun". We even allow guns to be sold online. Or at garage sales!

  6. Yes, it is a song by The Clash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN1WwnEDWAM
(Punk rock. Consider that your warning.)

Too bad for Harley. At least that will make a great story for the future (once she's completely healed ;)

  7. That is such a shame about Harley being sick for Winter Formal. Let's hope prom goes better in the spring! Lovely couple she and her date made! that is sweet he wants to take her out "all decked up" when she is feeling better.

I think the sanctity of life is not as important as it was when we were younger. These days there are video games that promote violence, God is not allowed in the schools, people pretty much do what they want to do when they want to do it. There is just downright evil and more so as we keep shutting God out of this and that. The enemy is out to destroy, but God's kingdom is being advanced. I think we will see more incidents like we have seen over the past few weeks, not less in the days ahead. I think we should be looking toward the sky and praying a lot for our country and revival. But that is just me.

I worked for a group of cardiologists based out of the hospital. Two of them in the time I was there had affairs with nurses and divorced their wives. Something was in the water there :)

When I get down, I either cry a bit and then move on to a good depressing book (it uplifts me somehow) or binge watch Netflix.

  9. Sorry about Harley getting sick. Never fun for anyone when it happens, but especially when you have plans.
I turn off the radio when the POTUS comes on. I scan news stories and don't dwell. I tried to watch a TV show about Putin and had to quit. I read a book instead - maybe a cozy mystery. The world is scary.

  10. It was sweet of Isaiah to say he'd take Harley out again in her fancy dress. He sounds like a keeper. It is too bad she got sick.

I read yesterday that since October 1 in the U.S. there have been 900 fatalities and 2000 injuries due to gun violence. It does seem to onlookers that something needs to change with respect to laws and attitudes around guns. But how do you effect such enormous change when guns are part of the culture and bearing arms is entrenched in the constitution? I don't think there are any easy solutions, that's for sure. The loss of lives and human potential is so very, very sad.

    1. We definitely have a gun problem in this country. But I feel like so many are terrified about their 2nd amendment rights being taken away that they just don't care about how many are dying everyday due to guns.

  11. So sorry the senior formal was interrupted with the flu. At least that is what it sounds like and it is the season for sure. Yes there is a lot of bad going on but the way I combat it is to count my blessings and remember all the good and beautiful things in our world. Giving thanks for all that matters in our life makes us remember what is truly important. We need to foster and promote the good things in life instead of the bad...

  12. Love the pretty red dress, what a shame she got sick. She can wear it again at prom. It's sleeveless and dressy enough. Winter formal around here is well not really formal. Maybe just a bump up from homecoming back in our day. Hope she's feeling better soon.

I don't know why our country, our government fights gun control so badly. I have a co worker who's from Scotland and she thinks we're nuts. I don't think we are learning. Saw stats that there are more guns in the US then people. I find that a horrible stat. The 2nd admend. does not mean everyone is suppose to own a gun or 12, nor does it say automatics etc. People have twisted it to fit their needs/wants. Mental illness plays a part I think, but...the man currently in The WH, says that in one breathe without acknowledging he has cut funding for mental health in the many republican versions of health care. And that same party has softened gun control. Most recently Wisconsin is pushing or has passed gun laws allowing younger children to have guns. Some states allow people with mental illness to own guns. So it's a real open mouth and insert foot when people say it's not about guns, it's about mental illness.

Senior pictures have surely changed, wearing bib overalls would not have been permitted in our day. Actually no self chosen outfit was. Makes me feel old. We all wore the same style white blouse, that the photographer had in multiple sizes. And the only other thing you could choose for your senior picture/ and the picture that went in the year book was one of those fuzzy boa's.

The welcome mats out, do come by.

    1. For prom, here, they wear long gowns. But she will probably be able to reap most of her money back with re-selling. I'm not from Scotland, but I think this country is nuts too! Just too sad that we can't (or won't) do something about the guns that are continually killing innocent people! Yes, senior pictures are a big ordeal now! Times change. I will make my way over soon Sandy!

  13. I wish I could look that beautiful when I'm sick! Love her dress so much!!

I got out and voted today for our Governor etc... and am hoping and praying I will get the outcome I'm looking for.

All of those people being killed - just makes me so sick to my stomach and so so sad... especially all those little kids and how scared they must have been.

I went to Starbucks after voting, to sit and have a hot drink - it is chilly and raining.... and all I could do while sitting there was think...what if someone comes in here with a gun and starts shooting. It was hard for me to just stay there and enjoy - but I'm trying to not let fear overcome me.

When everything gets too much for my emotions, I sing...

  15. Final thoughts, I just turn the channel when ever the news comes on. There is no true journalism anymore. One news caster tells his lie and the whole world of news anchors tart telling the same lie. Soon no one knows the truth or even looks for it. Even worse these days are "Reality Shows", you have to keep an open mind and watch them as "Fairy Tales" because that's what they are.
Sorry the girl got sick, but it's not the end of the world
Headed south or east for Thanksgiving?
Time to put on the new tenny's and walk another 1/4 mile, treadmill time. Trying to get limber enough to do these miles all at once instead of breaking them down into 1/4

  16. So sorry Harley was so sick. Hope she is feeling better now. My heart breaks for all those who are senselessly losing their lives. I am, as you know, a gun owner and Frank is a CPL instructor. Instead of making tougher regulations (as they should) Michigan has now decided that residents don't even need any training prior to carrying a weapon.....That makes a ton of sense.....NOT

    1. Thank you Wendy. Harley is much better. A 24-hour bug is all. Yes, I know you and Frank on gun owners. And I respect that. I still think this country needs a much stricter gun control than we have. These shootings are happening too frequently. Something is wrong. I do realize we cannot keep guns out of the hands of criminals. But we should be able to do SOMETHING!

  17. Sorry about Harley getting sick, she looked just lovely in that red dress. I hope she and her beau will have a great time having another date. I think semi-automatic weapons should be totally banned. The number of people killed or wounded by guns in this country is shocking. No other country comes close. And it is getting worse, these mass shootings lately are just too much to even comprehend. To answer your last question, I stay at home with the dogs as much as I can, I walk in nature, I silence Trump whenever he comes on the news, and while I may listen to the first report of a shooting like the one we just had, I don't watch it over and over as the days go on and it stays on the news. I love these posts by the way. I often wonder if I could do one.
