Five Minute Friday-Breathe

Do you know what I love about writing with the Five Minute Friday crew? Kate provides the prompt and all we have to do is write for 5 minutes! Can it get any easier than that? Then link up and read others posts and share the love.....here we go:

Breathe is this week's prompt, so

Go

I have known for a long time that we live in a much different world. It is an unkind world. It is a world where you should keep all of your opinions to yourself unless you are a really strong person. Because you are going to be labeled a "liberal" or have your intelligence insulted if you disagree with anyone. About anything. My suggestion to people is just to breathe.

Take a deep breath and think before you speak. Or in this case, type. Is this what you really want to say? Is that how you really want to say it? I like to state my opinion, on most matters, and if you disagree with me (and you do it politely) then it is fine. But if you are going to challenge me and call me names then you are bound to get me riled up. And I probably won't be nice to you. Because that is just the way I am.

Now we need to breathe! Take a deep breath! Hold it! Count slowly to 10! And release. Do you still want to insult someone. Your tongues can be as sharp as a sword.

Proverbs 12:18 says "Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."

Which would you rather do? Pierce someone with a sword? Or help with the healing? I am taking special precautions in my life to help with the healing. It is necessary for us to breathe! And think before we speak. Or type!

Stop

  1. Amen! This is such a great reminder. We need to breathe and remember that others are not our enemies even if their opinion is different than ours. I am stopping by from Five Minute Friday. I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  5. Amen! Was it really that long ago, in the aftermath of 9/11 when total strangers hugged one another in the streets ... we stood shoulder-to-shoulder. Breathe!

  6. The Bible is filled with so many scriptures on controlling the tongue. I wonder why that is (LOL). We need to breathe, count to 10 and then think "do we really want to say that" "Do we know the impact our words may cause?

That old adage sticks and bones may break my bones, but words will never harm me may not really be applicable these days.

May the words of my mouth always be pleasing to God.

  8. Taking a deep breath and counting to 10 is the best way to go. Speaking before we think, especially if we are angry, is often disastrous. A deep breath always helps to calm me down.

  9. I agree. When someone does or says something that upsets us, we need to breathe before we end up saying or doing something we will regret later. It's also important to breathe for our health, I do deep breathing exercises every day.

Very wise words, Paula and certainly in these days where once it's out there in the blogosphere it's out there forever it is very wise to take that step away from the keyboard and breathe - I think a very important lesson for the young of today who are forever tapping away!! 12. Amen, my dear friend. I feel myself holding my breath whenever I go onto a social media site. I will remind myself to breathe and to not bite at the ever present baiting.

You're right, it's best to take a moment and breathe before jumping into the fray.

  16. This is good - our tongues have caused wars and unbelievable pain since the beginning of time. It would be nice, if we could all show restraint, when someone has a different opinion by just thanking them for it. Bottomline, we're all we are all different and our personal stories are different. How BORING it would be if we all shared the same opinions. Being a Californian, I have grownup, allowing others to share their opinions. Until recently, California has been OPEN to all thoughts and opinions but like always, theres always a few rotton eggs in the bunch.

    1. I think this country has become much more divided over the past few years. It is so nasty out there in the world. Especially on social media. I am going to try to do my part in being less nasty while still speaking my mind. There is more than one opinion in this world. And it is okay to state what you think!!
