Thursday's Question

What do you call that carbonated beverage you drink? Pop? or Soda?

We are in the Midwest and it is called pop here! Never by the brand name unless you have choice. It's just, "Do you want a pop?"

Now, please, I must know. What do you call it?

  1. The words are interchangeable here, generally followed by a listing of what the host has on hand. My sister brings her own RC; it's ot so popular here.

  2. Pop, for sure! But I'm MN and that's Midwest like KS. I hear "soda" when I'm at work because we have many faculty and students who migrated to the MN from outside the Midwest.

  7. Just like the folks in Texas, here in Georgia, we refer to all sodas as "Coke". Ha!

  9. I am in the UK - and I'd call it "fizzy". (Just to throw a spanner into the works!) Some people might say "pop" depending on what area they live in the UK. Almost no one would call it "soda" here as that's a particular type of mixer we use here that usually goes with spirits.
I love your term "popsicle" - so cute! We call that a lolly.Lolly can also mean cash/money here....It's such a complicated language!

  10. I grew up in a small town (Milford, Ohio) - and it was always "pop" - and still is back there. In fact, when we were younger, we always got "pop" night on Friday nights. We got one small coke and a small bag of chips or fritos. Now that I'm in Virginia, I've learned to call it soda - but it still seems strange!

    1. Thanks for sharing Linda. I remember living in Newport News, Va. and I never knew what they were talking about when they asked if I wanted a soda. I usually asked for a Pepsi! LOL

  11. We always call it pop here. When people say soda it makes me think of two things...baking soda or tonic water!!
